Wines Of The Week: Rocca Di Montemassi And Tenuta Di Arceno

By | News | No Comments

I’ll be going back to featuring wines from around the world next Friday, but today, my Wines of the Week are again from Tuscany, where I just returned from spending five weeks with my family exploring the vast range of reds, whites, and rosati that are produced there. There is so much more to write about the region and its incredible array of energetic, wildly talented producers, which I’ll certainly be doing, but for now, I want to put the spotlight on Rocca di Montemassi and Tenuta di Arceno.

My white Wine of the Week, the Rocca di Montemassi Calasole Vermentino 2018, comes from the Maremma, the vast agricultural area of the Tuscan Coast that in recent years has seen somewhat of an increase in visibility in the United States. It’s a well-earned success story: This land of generous plains and gently rolling hills wasn’t always so idyllic: At one time malaria-ridden and almost swamp-like, it had to be drained in order for its full agricultural potential to be realized. For a time, it was a center of mining in the region. Even today, small towns in the hills are surrounded by vast swaths of flat farmland, and among the vineyards are also farms that grow cereal grains, livestock, and more.

Rocca di Montemassi, in fact—which was bought by the Zonin family in 1999—still raises Maremmana cattle, a unique breed of white cows, on the gorgeous 49-acre property, including 37 acres of grape vines. There’s also a lovely agriturismo on-site, as well as a fascinating Museum of Rural Civilization.

The wines they produce, crafted by Winemaker Alessandro Gallo, are delicious. I tasted through the entire range of current releases, and while I thoroughly enjoyed them all (the Sangiovese-dominant Le Focaie 2017 is a serious value, and the eponymous Rocca di Montemassi 2016, with its aromas dense with cassis, meat, flowers, and peppercorns, and its palate bursting with fig paste, sweet spice, candied violets, orange peels, and star anise, is a blockbuster), the Calasole Vermentino 2018 is my white Wine of the Week.

Like so many of the other standout Vermentino-based wines from the Maremma that I tasted during my time in Tuscany, this one is also marked by a telltale sense of salinity that lends savory mineral notes to the fruit, in this case a banana-like hint to aromas of pineapples and citrus. These follow through to the palate, which maintains serious balance through the energetic, tension-filled finish. And at less than $15 per bottle, it’s a phenomenal value.

My red Wine of the Week, the Tenuta di Arceno Arcanum 2015, is a wine that is deeply tied to its place of origin, a Cabernet Franc-based blend that shows exactly why this land in Castelnuovo Berardenga is so perfectly suited to a grape variety most famously utilized on the Right Bank of Bordeaux. Grown mostly in two specific blocks on the Jackson Family-owned estate, and crafted by Viticulturalist and Winemaker Pierre Seillan and Winemaker Lawrence Cronin, the 2015 is a three-decade wine…if you have the patience once it’s released next May. Until then, I strongly recommend the 2013, whose meaty and subtly floral notes are complicated by mixed berries, rosemary, spice, and a deep seam of minerality. (SRP: $100)

With supporting roles played by Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, this vintage of Arcanum is brilliantly shot through with the inimitable marks of world-class Cab Franc: Aromas of brambly purple fruits and licorice precede a rich, seriously structured palate vibrating with notes of spearmint, dark chocolate, allspice, charred rosemary, and something almost meaty pulsing through it all. It’s excellent right now, and promises to continue evolving in fascinating ways for another 30-plus years. (Interestingly, I also tasted the 2002 Arcanum, and despite the fact that it was from a less-than-venerated vintage, I loved it, the notes of leaves sweetly mouldering on the forest floor, currants, and mint both haunting and persistent at the same time. And that’s from a not-great year!)

Tenuta di Arceno is currently undergoing a bit of expansion, and their new vineyard sites—currently being planted or re-planted—includes land that, at a significantly higher altitude than the rest of their vineyards, is an average of 3.5-degrees Fahrenheit cooler than land just half a kilometer away. Its impact on the wines will be revealing and delicious to follow.

Both of these wines, then, are yet further evidence that Tuscany is a vast land of amazing breadth and seemingly limitless potential.

6 Winning Cocktails to Sip While Watching the 2019 Academy Awards

6 Winning Cocktails to Sip While Watching the 2019 Academy Awards

By | News | No Comments

It’s that time of year again! On February 24, the biggest stars in Hollywood will gather at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles for the 91st annual Academy Awards.

Some of this year’s nominations have already made historyRoma’s Best Picture nod is the first for Netflix, Spike Lee finally earned a best director nomination for BlacKkKlansmanLady Gaga is the second person ever (after Mary J. Blige in 2018) to be nominated for both Best Original Song and Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role for A Star is BornBlack Panther is the first superhero flick up for Best Picture and Yalitza Aparicio is the first Latina Best Actress nominee in over a decade.

Also notable is the fact that this year’s Oscars will go on without a host for the first time since 1989. Comedian Kevin Hart stepped down from the role in December 2018 due to the major backlash he received after homophobic Tweets he wrote between July 2009 and January 2011 resurfaced. Thankfully, a slew of awesome presenters, such as AwkwafinaDaniel CraigJennifer LopezChadwick BosemanJames McAvoyMelissa McCarthyJason Momoa and Sarah Paulson will be there to ensure that the show goes on. And there’s no reason you can’t host your own viewing party — complete with delicious cocktails.

On February 13, Black Panther star Michael B. Jordan invited Us to Las’ Lap, the cocktail bar he co-owns in New York City’s Lower East Side, and taught Us how to make the perfect cocktail to sip as you watch the night’s biggest moments (Gaga and Bradley Cooper performing! The rumored Avengers reunionGlenn Close possibly nabbing her first trophy!) unfold.

“The drink sounds tough, but it’s actually pretty easy to put together,” the Creed star, 32, told Us. It involves muddling, which Jordan says is “my favorite part of the process.” It also incorporates Bacardi, St. Germain and Prosecco, so the Us Weekly’s Hottest Hunks nominee and rum connoisseur warns: “This drink is delicious, but strong.”

8 Wines To Pair With Chocolate For Valentine’s Day

By | Press release | No Comments

Wine and chocolate already have powerful appeal on an individual basis, but put them together and you’re in for one indulgent pairing. But it’s not as simple as grabbing a  pretty-labeled bottle off the shelf and blindly shoving chocolate kisses in your mouth.

“Pairing wine with sweets can be a challenge,” says Jeff Porter, certified sommelier and host of the upcoming video series Sip Trip. First off, there’s a bunch of sugar everywhere; second, everyone’s go-to ‘match’ of big Cabernets and chocolate is actually kind of a miss, since the wine’s bitter tannins tend to suffocate the chocolate.

“When pairing desserts [with wine], I try to keep the sweetness levels somewhat in line,” Porter says, “but moreso, I look for flavors that work together. I think of all the awesome candy bars I’ve had as a kid and try to recreate some of those flavor synergies with wine and chocolate.” Take a Snickers bar with its nuts, caramel, and chocolate — you might look for a wine with nuttiness and caramel notes to complement the chocolate.

With Valentine’s Day looming, we’ve got you covered with eight swoon-worthy wine and chocolate pairings (plus one bonus beer pairing).

Zenato Cormí Merlot Corvina delle Venezie IGT 2013 ($23)

Pair with: Dark or milk chocolate candy
Hailing from Italy’s Valpolicella region, this full-bodied red is 50% merlot and 50% corvina, the region’s signature red varietal. This is an expression of two halves becoming one (delicious wine), offering a red berry bouquet and notes of cherries, blackberries, and mint, while the merlot creates a soft mouthfeel that begs to be paired with dark or milk chocolate. Plus, “Cormi” means “my heart” in Veronese dialect, and the label’s festive heart graphic will gain you back brownie points since that candy definitely came from the drugstore.

Mumm Napa Brut Rosé ($24)

Pair with: Milk chocolate-covered strawberries
With roots leading back to international French Champagne house G.H. Mumm, Mumm Napa certainly knows how to do sophisticated sparkling wine — which always feels more celebratory. This rosé brut is created, naturally, using Champagne’s Traditional Method and 18 months yeast aging. While chardonnay (20%) can take credit for its structure and poise, pinot noir (80%) delivers the pink coral color, soft texture, and bold red fruit flavors — all that makes for a seductive match with the sweetness of milk chocolate covered strawberries.

The Federalist Bourbon Barrel-Aged Zinfandel ($21.99)

Pair with: Dark chocolate covered caramel with sea salt
This California blend of zinfandel, petit syrah, and merlot was aged for months in American oak barrels, then finished off in bourbon barrels for another six months. The resulting juice has robust fruit flavors and just enough tannins to balance out dark chocolate’s slight bitterness; with the wine’s caramel smokiness on the palate and nose reaped from the bourbon barrels, it naturally meshes with the savory caramel in the chocolate and its salty notes on top.

Marques de Murrieta Capellanía White Reserva 2014 ($30)

Pair with: White chocolate-dipped oranges
This white from Rioja, Spain, was aged for 15 months in French oak barrels, then briefly fermented in stainless steel — the outcome is a wine as complex as your relationship status. Take a sip and bask in the mouth-coating richness, which plays well with the extra-sweet cocoa butter in white chocolate. Next, take a bite — the wine’s lingering, subtle flavors of coconut, candied citrus, and cinnamon swirl together with the chocolate-soaked orange. Now, take another sip… and repeat until it’s all gone.

Santa Julia Tintillo 2018 ($13)

Pair with: Creamy chocolate mousse
The Mendoza region of Argentina is renowned for their spectacular malbecs. Here’s a medium-bodied 50/50 blend of malbec and Bonarda grapes that showcases juicy fruit flavors (strawberries, cherries, raspberries), bright acidity, and a noticeable lack of tannins. When served slightly chilled with V-day dessert, the wine’s easy-drinking character makes a sultry combo with silky chocolate mousse (especially if bae is spoon-feeding it to you).

Rocca di Montemassi Renaissance Rosé 2017 ($16.99)

Pair with: Semi-sweet and spicy dark chocolate
It’s Valentine’s Day: Time to accept that rosé is a year-round sip, think pink, and turn up the heat! This elegant rosé from Tuscany is a delicate blend of sangiovese (60%) and syrah (40%) that’s sure to unveil that love is not lost on you. The wine lures you in with ripe fruit flavors and fresh floral aromas, then delivers a burst of spice at the finish (from the syrah). If you’re feeling flirty, this balanced pink wine lends itself to adventure — like glugging a glass between zippy nibbles of semi-sweet dark chocolate infused with chili pepper.

BERA Brachetto Piemonte DOC 2016 ($18)

Pair with: Chocolate peanut butter fudge
Maybe you’re spending Valentine’s Day with your lover by candlelight; or maybe you’re sweatpants-clad with your best friends and trashing your exes. Either way, you’ve met your sipping match with a red frizzante (semi-sparkling). This rich, medium-sweet wine is made with 100% brachetto grapes (grown predominantly in the Piedmont region) and is bursting with tastes of sweet plums and red cherries. And what better to pair with these jammy flavors than a square of chocolate peanut butter fudge? The answer is five squares of chocolate peanut butter fudge.

Kendall-Jackson 2017 Vintner’s Reserve Chardonnay ($17)

Pair with: Chocolate-drizzled popcorn balls
Buttery chardonnay is style that’s quintessentially Napa Valley; the wine’s rich toastiness and long-lasting finish come from putting the grapes through a secondary (malolactic) fermentation to soften the acidity and round out the flavors. This popular bottle of chardonnay is vibrant, complex, and, of course, buttery, making it exceptionally food-friendly. Bust out the chocolate-drizzled popcorn balls (ideally sprinkled with red and pink M&Ms) and it’s truly a match made in heaven.

Bonus Beer!: Sapporo Premium Black ($3.99/can)

Pair with: Chocolate hazelnut truffles
You are correct: This is not a wine. But in the event your date is a chocolate-loving beer connoisseur, it’s important to tend to his/her inner desires on a Hallmark holiday. When you think of dark beer, you likely imagine heavy stouts and porters (say, Guinness), but this is a flavorful lager that drinks light — and leaves room for dessert. It has bold crispness, roasted dark malts, refined hops, and a semi-sweet fullness at the end. Each sip is crazy smooth and presents distinct coffee and chocolate notes, which will pair dangerously well with that box of chocolate hazelnut truffles.

Stefano Ferrante, chief winemaker, tasting wine

Zonin1821 Taps into the Soul of Chile

By | Press release | No Comments

Once it was New World winemakers who ventured forth, looking for new wine lands. Today, it’s just as likely to be French and Italian companies looking to expand into new terroirs. One such is Zonin1821, Italy’s largest family-owned wine company, who launched their new Dos Almas (‘two souls’) range of Chilean wines in 2017.

“We have a joint venture with a Chilean company, the Vial family,” said Domenico Zonin. He and chief winemaker Stefano Ferrante were at the Meininger offices in late June, pouring a range of Italian and Chilean wines. Zonin explained that the Vial family own a number of agricultural businesses in Chile, from salmon to fruit, and have significant investments in wine regions. Such a partnership made sense, because “it’s complicated if you have to invest everything” from scratch, he added.

One of the benefits of investing in Chile, Zonin continued, was that Chile had created so many international free trade agreements, plus an excellent distribution network in key markets such as China.  Companies like Zonin1821, who invest in Chile, can now access these networks.

“Chilean wines in China are growing at 30%,” said Zonin. “Last month we participated on a tour of Wines of Chile in China. Our guys were excited by the tour, because the Chileans are ten years ahead. They know the market better.” He added that the company also sees South American markets as good export prospects for the future.

For their part, the Italians see themselves as contributing expert Italian winemaking knowledge and experience to Chile.

To demonstrate, the tasting began by pouring the Prosecco Cuvee 1821 and the Dos Almas Brut from Casablanca.

“We ferment a lot of Prosecco every week,” explained Ferrante. “That lets us preserve the freshness of Prosecco, while decreasing the sulfur and preserving very aromatic and fresh Prosecco. We spend a lot of money on electricity, to referment the must in the tanks, but it’s worth it.”

Unusually, the wine is a Brut Prosecco. We have 200 ha of Prosecco in Friuli, which is a nice region for producing this very fresh, clean Prosecco,” Ferrante went on.

Chile is not known for its sparkling wines, but Ferrante believes that this is going to change, given the encouraging results.

“This is a charmat wine, like Prosecco,” he said as he poured the Dos Almas Brut. “Casablanca is perfect for sparkling wines, because they have a very cool climate with very long ripening at the end of the season. Naturally low pH, high acidity and an incredible natural balance.” The result, as he says, is “very salty, very dense and bigger than Prosecco.” The company’s ultimate goal is to be producing one million bottles within five years.

The tasting went through Zonin’s Italian Sauvignon Blanc, also from Friuli, the fresh and mouth-filling Ca Bolani Aquilis Sauvignon Blanc 2016. “We wanted to prove that Sauvignon Blanc could age,” observed Ferrante.

Then came the Chianti Classico Grand Selezione Santa Caterina 2015 single vineyard wine, followed by the Castella d’Albola Grand Selezione Il Saltio 2010, of which only 3,000 bottles were made, and which is already sold out. Ferrante believes that the wines produced by premium single Chianti Classico vineyards are rapidly becoming “the Burgundy of Italy”.

Also on the table were a Nero d’Avola from Sicily, a red blend from the new, trendy region of Maremma, a Primitivo from Puglia and a spicy Amarone. Given the focus of the tasting, the Dos Almas Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Reserve 2015 from Maipo was particularly interesting, with a palate showing a touch of balsamic vinegar freshness along with the fruit. Left overnight, the wine tasted even better the next day.

“We produce a range of seven [Chilean] wines now,” said Ferrante. “A sparkling, a Sauvignon Blanc, a Carménère, two Cabernet Sauvignons, a Pinot Noir and a red blend.” In 2019, the company plans to add a high-end wine from Apalta to the mix.

One of the Chilean wine industry’s most urgent issues is convincing the world that it produces fine wines, as well as its popular branded offerings. The excitement that European companies such as Zonin1821 are showing suggests they’re well on their way.

rows of Sangiovese grapes with blue sky in Tuscany, Italy

Brunello’s Nose Knows… Sangiovese (San Gee Oh Vay Say)

By | News, Events | No Comments

By Ed's Fine Wines

Sangiovese is the grape varietal from Italy used to make Chianti and my namesake, Brunello! The name is derived from Latin meaning “the blood of Jove” the Roman God Jupiter- probably from the color. DNA testing dates the varietal back to ancient Tuscany, believed to have been named by the Etruscan Monks. The varietal grows well in climates of limestone and shale clay (like Tuscany and the Montalcino regions) its home base in Central Italy. Sangiovese requires a long growing season and relative warmth. In cooler vintages, the wine will show even higher amounts of acidity. The Sangiovese grape is known for acidity anyway- a great pairing for acidic tomato sauces! A thin-skinned, light bodied and light colored grape, often winemakers will blend the varietal, or age it in barrique (oak barrels) to give it more structure. Throughout Italy, Sangiovese is known by other names, including ME! Brunello, also Morellino, and Prugnolo Gentile. Sangiovese is the most widely planted red grape varietal in Italy (over 250,000 acres) and authorized in over 60 regions. It is the lone grape of Brunello di Montalcino, and the primary grape used for Chianti, Vino Nobile di Montalcino, and many “Super Tuscans” blended with the Bordeaux varietals of Cabernet or Merlot. Significant plantings of Sangiovese can also be found outside Central Italy, in Emilia Romagna (next door to Tuscany) Valpolicella, and as far south as Compania and even the Isle of Sicily.

Italian wine laws made the DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) add Trebbiano and Malvasia grapes to wines produced and labeled from the Chianti region. Prior to the 1970’s, some wineries were illegally bringing in blending grapes from Puglia and Sicily to add color, body, and fruit, but really did nothing to aid in quality or reputation of the varietal. Today the style of Sangiovese is diverse and there is plum and cherry notes and various subregions of Chianti produce more spice. The wine is adaptable and able to age for many years.

In the mid 19th Century, producer Clemente Santi produced a 100% Sangiovese wine that proved to age well. By 1888, grandson, Biondi Santi released the first modern version of Brunello di Montalcino. In recent years, the Maremma area of Tuscany, outside Chianti, has been able to develop the Sangiovese grape to great potential as well.

Sangiovese is a grape varietal that also produces sweet wines such as Passito, semi-sparkling frizzante, and the dessert wine known as Vin Santo.

Today, in the US, California, Washington and even parts of Texas are growing the Sangiovese varietal. Here are a few wines we carry- you may want to check out this truly amazing varietal that I am named for!

Alexander Valley Vineyards Dry Rose’ of Sangiovese Sonoma, California

We love dry Rose’ here at Ed’s, as an aperitif, by the pool, or to pair with a light chicken or fish dish. AVV makes a beautiful bone dry Sangiovese Rose’, strawberry fruit and lemon peel. I give it two bones!

Seghesio Family Sangiovese Sonoma, California

Eduardo Seghesio first worked with Sangiovese in the late 1800’s at Italian Swiss Colony. He planted a Chianti field blend around that time on his own property in Sonoma, now known as “Home Ranch”. This wine boasts flavors of dark cherry and red plum with hints of anise. I give it two bones!

Rocca di Montemassi Le Focai, Maremma, Tuscany, Italy

Le Focai means “flint”, the wine is named for the rich mineral deposits found in the area of Maremma where the 100% Sangiovese wine is made. The wine is aged in French oak barrels for 12 months before bottling. It is rich with intense cherry fruit, undertones of violets with a soft finish. An affordable price and gold medal awards, I give it three bones!

Castello di Albola Chianti Classico DOCG Tuscany, Italy

The “Castle” Albola lies on the western slopes of Tuscan hills in the town of Chianti Classico, one of the highest elevations in the region. Bursting with notes of strawberry, red berries and sage; light, elegant and easy to drink, I give it two bones!

Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Tuscany, Italy

This highly rated wine is produced from 100% Sangiovese grapes, hand -picked from 20-year-old vines. The Brunello is aged for three years in French oak barrels, redolent of dark berry, black cherry, red plum, cedar and spice. I give it three bones!

Gran Selezione Revisited

By | News | No Comments

Four years on from the first release of Chianti Classico’s top-tier Gran Selezione wines, Monty Waldin assesses the ongoing debate around the classification.

IN FEBRUARY 2014 the first wines labeled under Chianti Classico's newly created top-level tier of Gran Selezione were released, from the 2010 vintage. Gran Selezione's introduction was controversial, to say the least, given that no fewer than 19 different iterations of red Tuscan wines bearing the word "Chianti" already existed.

The onus, one might think, was on Chianti Classico's Gran Selezione-funded partly by the wine-growers, but mainly by EU subsidies to demonstrate its clear points of difference from the two existing tiers below it; namely Chianti Classico Normale at the base of the quality pyramid, and Chianti Classico Riserva, which now finds itself in the middle.

Save yourself the eye-watering pain of examining reams of regulations looking for substantive technical wine-growing or winemaking differences between the Chianti Classico trio. There are none.

‘Gran Selezione can be made only from grapes grown on the property whose name appears on the label’ Giovanni Manetti of the respected Fontodi winery

All three styles come from an identical area nine towns between Siena and Florence, of which more below, identical grapes (80%-100% Sangiovese, 20% other Tuscan or French grapes); identical maximum yields, and potentially identical winemaking and aging techniques.

Technical differences between bottled Chianti Classico, Chianti Classico Riserva, and Chianti Classico Gran Selezione are all but non-existent -unless the next time you wander into a wine store you specifically ask for a wine with a dry extract level of 26 grams per litre (Chianti Classico Gran Selezione) rather than one with only 25g/l (Chianti Classico Riserva), or even – heaven forfend – one with only 24g/l (Chianti Classico).

To me as a wine lover, the best part of the winemaking side is that no wines in any of the three categories need see any wood. Oak aging is optional – hooray!

Allowing 100% unoaked, 100% Sangiovese Chianti Classico Gran Selezione creates the potential to make what can be the purest, complex and compelling Sangiovese wines on the planet (yes, my friends in Montalcino of Brunello fame, where lashings of oak are mandatory, you read that right).

However, as outlined above, the "no oak required' option already existed for both Chianti Classico and Chianti Classico Riserva I see really only one substantive aspect to Gran Selezione that makes it unique and which Giovanni Manetti, of the much- respected family-owned Fontodi winery and vice-president of the Consorzio Vino Chianti Classico (wine-growers' council) elucidates: "Gran Selezione can be made only from grapes grown on the property (integralmente prodotto) whose name appears on the label. By contrast, Chianti Classico can be made from bought-in grapes or bought-in bulk wines."

Adding value

Bulk wine prices for Chianti Classico are three times lower than those for Italy's other red wine titans of Brunello di Montalcino, Barolo and Amarone Della Valpolicella. Chianti Classico's market under-valuation is great news for savvy wine buyers and drinkers and stems from Chianti Classico being often (understandably) muddled in consumers' minds with basic Chianti wines. This is despite Chianti Classico coming from 20% lower- yielding vines compared to Chianti.

And in terms of its history, Chianti Classico has pedigree, having been first officially defined as a region in 1716, more than 150 years before Brunello di Montalcino even existed, for example. As mentioned, only nine towns qualify for Chianti Classico and therefore potential Gran Selezione' wine status. In contrast, a full nine pages of A4 paper are needed to list the town boundaries of the lesser Chianti zone.

So can Gran Selezione be seen as attempting to give Chianti Classico – or the estate-grown and bottled version of it at least –  some due market recognition? Apparently not, or not so far anyway, given that only 7% of Chianti Classico's production is estimated to be bottled as Gran Selezione. Critics say Gran Selezione is devalued by allowing some wineries to label batches of several hundred thousand bottles at a time as such; but as Château Latour makes several hundred thousand bottles each year, then big is not automatically bad.

The fact that precise data regarding the success or otherwise of the Gran Selezione category appears to be confidential (despite its creation having benefitted from sizeable EU funds aimed at promoting the farming sector) is an irritant to the likes of Paolo Cianferoni of the Caparsa winery in Radda. "Gran Selezione was needless; an extra layer of confusion created by marketing people hoping to help Chianti Classico out of a sales crisis", Cianferoni states. Gran Selezione was designed to tempt back those producers who switched from labeling their wine as Chianti Classico to labeling them as "Toscana Rosso" instead, when Bordeaux-influenced Chianti-style wines were in fashion.

"My best wine at Caparsa is labeled Chianti Classico Riserva and won't become Gran Selezione. Adding value to Chianti Classico should have been so much simpler. Just allow producers to put the name of the village the wine comes from on the label. They do this in Burgundy and it seems to work rather well there. Why can't we do it here, too?"

Terroir-free

The allusion to Burgundy is a frequent Chianti Classico refrain, one usually made by smaller, terroir-driven producers like Monte Bernardi's Michael Schmelzer. "Chianti Classico's Sangiovese and Burgundy's Pinot Noir vineyards are the same size,' he says. "We can't imagine every Pinot Noir leaving the Cote d'Or just being called "Burgundy" but that's what we do in Chianti Classico. Every wine leaving Chianti Classico, be it a Riserva or a Gran Selezione, is still just a Chianti Classico.

"On sales trips I get told, "We love the wines but we already have three Chianti Classicos on the list." You can't imagine someone saying "I already have three Bordeaux or three Burgundies – I don't need anymore." Barolo lovers actively seek out the differences in Barolos from the communes of, say, La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, and Serralunga d'Alba.

But, as things stand, Chianti Classico's producers can't officially articulate the differences between a wine from any of the region's nine towns," he adds.

‘Gran Selezione was needless; an extra layer of confusion created by marketing people hoping to help Chianti Classico out of a sales crisis’ Paolo Cianferoni, Caparsa

Both Schmelzer and Roberto Stucchi Prinetti of Badia a Coltibuono in Gaiole would go even further. Stucchi says, "Rather than making the Chianti Classico pyramid higher with Gran Selezione, it would have made more sense to have the exact geographic mention of where the grapes came from on the label. Each main Chianti Classico commune has individual terroirs, around hamlets such as Monti in Gaiole, and Lamole or Panzano which are very different parts of Greve, and so on.

Another sticking point Stucchi Prinetti identifies "is that you do not have to declare at harvest that a specific lot of grapes will become a Gran Selezione, so in the end it's just the tasting panel that chooses just before bottling what can be labeled as such."

This tasting panel, appointed by the Consorzio Vino Chianti Classico, is fully independent. Yet debates rage about whether the panel favors modern-style wines – very bright fruit, plumped up with a bit of Merlot and sprinkled with vanilla from barrel aging – or more traditional, grainier and more obviously Sangiovese wines whose fruit is slower to emerge.

Do I love Chianti Classico? Yes, it is one of the world's great red wines, and still hugely undervalued compared to Brunello or Barolo. The best have mouthwatering, high-wire fruit and deft, savory richness. But given that the rules for Chianti Classico and Chianti Classico Gran Selezione are exactly the same, to all intents and purposes, it is impossible to comment on any differences. The argument that Gran Selezione has allowed producers to sell the same wines for a higher price requires statistics and infallible blind tasters. In my experience, Gran Selezione can provide Chianti Classico fans with a representative range of styles, whether 100% Tuscan grapes or Tuscan-French blends. Another thing to remember: the rules allow wines made prior to the introduction of Gran Selezione to be bottled as such -Isole e Olena, for example, released a Gran Selezione 2006.

‘Gran Selezione can provide Chianti Classico fans with a representative range of styles, whether 100% Tuscan grapes or Tuscan-French blends’

The term may mean "great selection', but the only problem is that the people running the show appear ambivalent about making it easier to dig deeper into Chianti Classico's truly thrilling "Gran Selezione' of world-class micro-terroirs. It'll happen one day. It has to.

Chianti by numbers

Chianti is made up of eight regions: Chianti, Chianti Colli Aretini, Chianti Colli Fiorentini, Chianti Colli Senesi, Chianti Colline Pisane, Chianti Montalbano, Chianti Montespertoli and Chianti Rùfina, each of which has a riserva category – so that’s 16 possible names to differentiate between on your wine label already – plus a single Chianti Superiore category (17), plus three types of Chianti Classico: normale, Riserva and now Gran Selezione (20). The 71,800ha of the Chianti Classico zone covers nine towns: the entire territories of Castellina in Chianti, Gaiole in Chianti, Greve in Chianti and Radda in Chianti and parts of the territories of Barberino Val d’Elsa, Castelnuovo Berardenga, Poggibonsi, San Casciano Val di Pesa and Tavarnelle Val di Pesa.

MIAbites – National Rosé Day is June 10th

By | News | No Comments

By MIAbites

This past Satruday June 10th was National Rosé Day. National Rosé Day is observed annually on the second Saturday in June.

Rosé is probably the oldest known type of wine, dating back as far as 600 BC. Rosé wines are generally made from red grapes and are very versatile wines that complement many types of food. Rosé is lighter than red wine and deeper than white wine.

The pink color of rosé wine depends on the time the grape skin stays in contact with the juice, also known as maceration. There are rosé wines that are semi-sparkling or sparkling with different intense of sweetness levels and dryness.

Here are a few spots you can celebrate this refreshing wine holiday:

Hello Sweet Life Collection – Castello del Poggio, Total Wine

Hello Sweet Life Collection - Castello del Poggio

Enjoy National Rosé Day at home with this delightfully sweet rosé that just launched in Miami this week. As the warm weather draws upon us, you will be looking for reasons to stay cool, bubbly and refreshed! The official launch of Castello del Poggio “Hello Sweet Life” Collection, a range of summer approved Italian wines are the perfect kick start for the season.

William Fevre Chablis

Cape Gazette – Refreshing White Wines Are Perfect for Summer

Refreshing white wines are perfect for summer

William Fevre Chablis Vaudesir Grand Cru 2014 is remarkably wonderful and perfect with white fish. Shows a beautiful bouquet of pear, pineapple, lemon, beeswax and chalky mineral notes. I also detected a floral subtone. On the palate, full-bodied and a bit restrained suggesting need for more cellaring. The mid palate has depth, bright acids and grip that continues through the long, clean finish. I realize I am being repetitive but these are white Chardonnay made to cellar. The 2014 and ’15 are two of the best recent vintages, 94 points McD under $55.Avoid the 2016. The window for 2014 will by 2018-30, at least. They are approachable now. Nearly all us “Muricans” have been exposed to Chablis, invariably served while far too young for consumption. You have missed a great deal if you haven’t enjoyed a Grand Cru Chablis that is properly aged. Fevre produces several Grand Cru Chablis. I preferred the Vaudesir. In most cases I am a fan of Les Clos. You may be surprised to learn that although these “Climats” (S is silent) are proximate they have definite characteristics related to how far up the hills they are (chalkier higher up) and sun exposure. The Chablis Grand Cru appellation includes seven Climats: Blanchot, Bougros, Les Clos, Grenouilles, Preuses, Valmur, and Vaudésir. They are primarily produced in the environs of the village of Chablis, but also at Fyé and Poinchy.

How about an 89-point McD $12 bottle of very refreshing white? We enjoy Feudo Principi di Butera Insolia Sicilia 2015. Two other Insolia more readily available are named Corvo and Adesso. In the past, I have sampled theirs. To be frank, they were not interesting. Feudo 2015 was a pleasant surprise. Generally, Insolia juice is more commonly used to blend in Marsala or with other whites. The 2015 Feudo breaks that mold. It is richer, with honey and nuts, and a silky, smooth texture. Try some with flounder or trout almandine. Barbara and I were pleased with the combo. Here is an interesting factoid. The varietal appears to have originated in Greece and is a very old strain. It is also known as any of the following: Ansonica, Amsonica, Ansolia, Ansolica, Ansoliku, Ansonica Bianca, Ansora, Ansoria, Ansorica, Anzonaka, Anzonica, Anzulu, Arba Solika, Erba Insolika, Inselida, Insolia di Palermo, Insora, Inzolia, Inzolia Parchitana, Nsolia, Nsuolia, Nzolia, Nzolia Bianca, Nzolia di Lipari, Nzolia di Palermo, Soria, Zolia Bianca. I am always suspicious of anything with that number of aliases. Rest assured in the case of Feudo Insolia 2015. These are not for the cellar and are vintage specific, like all my recommendations.

I want to thank all who have emailed. In the past, I would respond to enquiries in the column, naming the culprits. At this point, the entire space would be taken up on many occasions. I decided to just respond individually. One aspect of receiving your mail is it prods me out of my comfort zone. Let me assure readers that is a positive and a benefit to all. There is so much delightful product out there. Due to the internet, your local well-developed wine shop relationship should allow you to find access to each selection I explore.

Food and Wine – 5 Wines Under $15 to Pair with Easter Ham

By | Events | No Comments

By Food and Wine

While there are myriad reasons why lamb is the traditional meat to eat on Easter, there’s also very sound reasoning behind the argument that it’s also counterintuitive: If this is a celebration of spring, why not lighten it up a bit? Let’s have ham, instead! And let’s drink wines that pivot toward the change in temperature, brighten our moods and make the ham taste even better, too. Here's what to drink with every kind of ham:

For ham slathered in spicy mayo or aioli

Anna de Codorniu Cava Brut Rosé ($13)
This Cava made in the “traditional” (read: Champagne) method is (like a lot of Champagne) composed of 70 percent Pinot Noir (Chardonnay, the remainder), and it shows, literally, in its salmon/pale-pink appearance. While there are lovely aromas of cherries and berries all over the place, it’s this bubbly’s bracing acidity that keeps coming through, straight into the finish.

For fruity, glazed ham

2015 Rocca Di Montemassi Calasole Vermentino ($15)
Behold: your first bouquet of white flowers this spring as you take in the heady nose of this Tuscan Vermentino. However, this is no delicate flower of a wine, as it quickly dives deep from delicate to minerally, even nutty (think hazelnuts, in particular), landing on a crunchy bite of Granny Smith apple in the finish.

For smoked ham with a sweet-tart glaze

2016 Mulderbosch Cabernet Sauvignon Rosé ($14)
Here’s the lightest Cabernet you may ever taste (or gulp, actually, which is inevitable after the first sip). While Mulderbosch earned its street cred with its racy Sauvignon Blanc, this dusty pink pleaser from the other side of the planet is selling fast since it debuted. Here’s why: it proffers waves of refreshing pink grapefruit acidity coupled with succulent, ripe watermelon—the kind you can’t stop eating.

For fresh ham that's been braised in booze

2015 Les Dauphins Côtes du Rhône Reserve Rouge ($13)
This is your go-to red for springtime quaffing (heck—straight through summer!), served preferably a tad chilled, featuring silky Grenache (with Syrah making up the rest, plus a slash of Mourvèdre) boasting berries of the red and black variety, plus a touch of dusty spice and sweet, juicy tannins in the finish.

For your leftovers: grilled ham and cheese sandwiches

2016 Masciarelli Villa Gemma Abruzzo Cerasuolo ($15)
The word “cerasuolo” means “cherry-like” in Italian, and describes this wine’s gorgeous, transparent garnet color, thanks to very brief grape skin contact during fermentation. The resulting red plays it both ways, with cherry, brambly, red wine fruit flavors wrapped around a tight beam of mouthwatering white wine acidity.

The Times Weekly – Wine of the Week: Two Wines From Italy Answer Grill Wine Riddle

By | News | No Comments

By The Times Weekly

What wine do I serve with barbecue and grilled meats and other grilled foods? It turns out two wines from very different regions of Italy have solved the riddle; Citra Caroso ($21.99) Montepulciano from the Abruzzi coastal region in central Italy, not far from Tuscany and Principi Di Butera Insolia DOC ($14.99), a lovely white wine from Sicily. Both are as different in their characteristics as the regions they come from, but cover the complete gamut of flavors typical of the plethora of grilled items served at the family cookout.

Let's start with Insolia. The wine is made from 100% Insolia grapes, native to Riesi, Sicily, where the grapes are harvested at night then rushed to stainless steel tanks where they are fermented for 7-10 days. Very cool temperatures preserve the fresh fruit flavors from the field. The wine is allowed to rest "on the lees,' for three months, meaning that it is allowed to rest on the spent yeast, which gives the wine its texture and rich mouth feel. Another six months of aging in stainless steel, further enhances the wine's flavors of ripe green and Golden Delicious apples, tangerines, Meyer lemon and Key Limes and the subtle flavor and texture of lemon sorbet and the smell of white jasmine flowers and chamomile. The color of yellow straw and flecks of green and hints of fresh cut sage make it the perfect accompaniment with seafood salads, grilled shrimp or diver scallops and a steaming earthen bowl of mushroom risotto, hand pressed couscous, or grilled whole fish, scored and brushed with stems of fresh rosemary dipped in olive oil.

Paste Magazine – Great White Wines for Summer…All Under $25

By | News | No Comments

By Paste Magazine

Though red wines and Champagnes tend to command the truly jaw-dropping prices, there are a hell of a lot of expensive whites out there. This can make it confusing to select one. You might feel tempted to think less pricey equals less good. Which can be true, but by no means always.

Rocca De Montemassi Calasole Vermentino (Tuscany, Italy) $15

Subtle and nuanced Tuscan white. Floral nose, almond base, and a bunch of fruit and spice layers in between: yellow plum, apple, a bit of citrus. Good acidity. A sort of “dusty” minerality that I find is common to Tuscan wines. The occasion for this one? Pasta. Fish. Thursday. You’re thirsty. Whatever.

Castello di Albola Poggio Alle Fate (Tuscany, Italy) $12

This is a 100% Chardonnay from the land of Chianti. Pale straw color with green tinges. Lean (though not as bony as a white Burgundy) and very dry, with pleasant acidity and a pretty long finish that’s long on green apples. Grapefruity nose, pineapple, lime and stone on the palate. Italian wines are “food wines” almost across the board, and this one’s no different. Try it with risotto (and in risotto for that matter), calamari, pasta dishes, grilled chicken, summer vegetables. It’s very easy-going.

Feudo Principi di Butera Insolia (Sicily) $16

I like all the wines on this list; some of them I love. This one’s a great prescription for Bored Palate Syndrome. Insolia is a traditional grape from the island of Sicily that’s made as a varietal, used in blends, and is one of the grapes used to make the fortified wine marsala. This iteration is light bodied, a crystalline pale yellow, with the bright, lemony acidity common to Albarinos, but the palate’s totally different, with dominant notes of almonds, oranges, and white flowers as well as faint traces of herbs (I get lemon thyme and maybe a little bit of fennel). The herbaceous notes should make it fun to pair with dishes that echo those notes (herb crusted fish or chicken seem like obvious choices); I’d also pair this with scallops in a heartbeat. The other night I tried it with an incredibly sophisticated meal-mashed potatoes-and it was terrific. I’m saying, as I will say with most of these wines, don’t sweat it. They’re versatile. If they’re not I will mention it. Upshot? Yummy no matter what.

Cape Gazette – Two Reds, Two Whites and a Blue Wine Make Things Festive

By | News | No Comments

By Cape Gazette

Sunday evening was the bomb! After a brief burst of activity at Grove Market, the night proved to be uneventful until my drive home. Rehoboth traffic was flagged to a slow, confused mess, as fireworks let out there. I was told the smoke and red glare of the rockets bursting in air was quite lovely. Contrary to the ballyhoo by Mr. Trump’s whipping boys and gals, proof to all that this land of the free and brave still enjoys some degree of patriotism. Keeping with the theme, let’s do two reds, two whites and a blue today.

Castello del Poggio Prosecco DOC is a straw-colored demi-sec with loads of sparkling tiny bubbles. Bright apple aromas supported by palate-cleansing minerality complete the package. This was sent to me as a sample. Place it on your list for a future purchase. Feudo Principi Di Butera 2014 was delicious with lobster and shrimp flashed ultra-hot with butter, red and spring onions, then poached in lobster broth, with tomato concassé added at the finish. Be sure to poach slow and low. Striate tails to prevent curling. Feudo is slightly green-tinged straw with a clear eye. The bouquet was floral (acacia and almonds) with some apple and tangerine. Nose repeated through the medium-bodied wine and was supported by crisp acidity and mineral notes, 88 McD points. Buy at $16 or $80/6-pak.

La Maison Verte

The Suburban – Urban Foodie Review: La Maison Verte

By | News | No Comments

By The Suburban

For French cuisine at its absolute finest, go to La Maison Verte. Situated in a 160-year old house in the West Island, the restaurant is a beautiful setting for a special celebration or just a beautiful night out.

My wife and I went to La Maison Verte to celebrate our anniversary, and what can we say: the food was superb! From the freshly prepared halibut and trout filets that we ordered, which were tender yet firm (cooked to perfection), to the refreshing sorbets that were given to us to cleanse our palettes after our freshly-prepared green salads, the staff at La Maison Verte don't miss a thing when it comes to providing patrons with top-notch food in a charming and warm setting (if the weather permits, sit on their terrasse and take in the spectacular waterfront views). They also have a wonderful selection of wines to pair with your meal, and we clanged glasses of Castello del Poggio red wine to celebrate our special milestone. Their vegetable veloute soup was also super tasty, and we indulged in a little dessert too (it was soooo good!).

The staff was helpful and yet non-intrusive, giving us an opportunity to eat a relaxed meal and reminisce about our wedding and the years since then. We thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience, and we'd definitely come back to La Maison Verte again (and we'd recommend it to our friends too!).

Wine Enthusiast Magazine – Your Guide to Becoming an Expert on Sparkling Wine

By | News | No Comments

By Wine Enthusiast Magazine

Sparkling wine, fizz, bubbly: call it what you will, but its effervescence spells joy and celebration. These tiny bubbles make all the difference, but how do they get there? How different sparkling wines are made can help you choose the right wine for the right occasion.

First things first: bubbles form when carbon dioxide gas dissolved in wine is released. Most sparkling wine bottles are thus under pressure, which explains the traditional spago (thread) closure for slightly sparkling Prosecco, and the wire muselet for fully sparkling wine. Both keep the cork in place.

Pressure is also why sparkling wine bottles are heavier and thicker than traditional wine bottles and have a deep punt in their bottom. Fully sparkling wine has up to six atmospheres of pressure, so bottles need to be structurally sound and sturdy. As the bottle is opened, that pressure releases and the wine begins to sparkle.

So how does carbon dioxide get into wine? Broadly speaking, there are three ways. The first way is to add it, like in soda. The second method is to trap carbon dioxide from the wine’s initial fermentation. The final way is to put finished wine, known as base wine, through a second fermentation and trap the resulting carbon dioxide. This can happen either in a tank or bottle, and it’s the way most sparkling wine is made. But let’s discuss the first two methods.

Adding carbon dioxide creates the least persistent effervescence, as the wines are just slightly fizzy. A special closure is not necessary.

It’s also possible to make a fizzy wine by trapping carbon dioxide from the first alcoholic fermentation. Usually, such carbon dioxide is allowed to escape, but a pressurized tank traps the gas at a desired point to create a fizzy wine.

Depending on when this process is halted, there can be residual sweetness in the wine. It’s then filtered to prevent further ferment and bottled under pressure, which preserves natural sweetness and fruity flavor. The resulting fizz is lively and frothy. This is how Asti Spumante is made.

Trapping carbon dioxide inside a bottle is known as méthode ancestrale, where a wine with residual sweetness is bottled and continues to ferment until all sugar is consumed. Trendy pétillants naturels, or pét nats, are made in this manner.

Riddling Racks Raventos

But now on to getting bubbles into wine via second fermentation. There’s a huge distinction between secondary fermentation in tank, known as Charmat method, and secondary fermentation in bottle, known as traditional method, méthode traditionnelle or metodo classico. Both create sparkling wine, but they produce different character and virtues. Both of these methods start out with still, dry base wine, to which an exact amount of both sugar and yeast is added which will induce the second fermentation.

For the Charmat method, a base wine that’s augmented with sugar and yeast is put into a pressurized tank where the second fermentation takes place. The carbon dioxide is trapped, and the dead yeast cells sink to the bottom. While these dead yeast cells (known as lees) add a degree of flavor, there’s little interaction between lees and wine. The resulting bubbles are bigger and frothier, and the flavors are far less complex. After a few months on lees, the wine is filtered and bottled under pressure.

This method is easier, cheaper and faster than the traditional method. The base wine’s primary varietal flavors remain and are accentuated by the lively, frothy foam. This is how most Prosecco is made, where the floral, fruity notes of the Glera grape take center stage. Food and Wine – Moscato 101: Everything You Need to Know about Moscato Wine

By | News | No Comments

By Food and Wine

Our guide to Moscato covers how to identify, taste, and savor this delicate, sweet wine.

Moscato wine evokes strong opinions among oenophiles—they adore its sweet fruit aroma or can’t stand it one bit. Whether sipped as an aperitif or dessert wine, mixed into cocktails for fizz, poached with fruit, or paired with fiery cuisine, Moscato is much more versatile and complex than most would realize. Moscato grapes, or muscat, are grown up and down Italy, making for a wide diversity of flavors and styles. From bubbly to still to fortified, Moscato makes a provocative addition to any wine lover’s repertoire. Our guide dishes out everything you need to know about this delicately fruity and floral wine.

Best Moscato Wines

Put your Moscato know-how to the test with our top picks. You won’t have to hop across the Atlantic for these wines—we’ve chosen a variety from sparkling to fortified that you should be able to find online or at your local wine store. Many vineyards will ship directly to your home if your state allows it.

2015 Castello del Poggio Moscato d’Asti
Producer: Castello del Poggio
Where: Piedmont, Italy
Tasting notes: Lightly-sparkling with a balance of sweet honey, peach and candied orange. Best enjoyed as an aperitif or dessert wine.
ABV: 5.5%
Average price: $10-$12

What are the different types of Moscato wine?

With a huge variety of Muscat grapes comes a diverse offering of Moscato wines. Many of these Moscato varieties are more difficult to find in the United States, but they’re reason enough to plan your next trip to Italy.

Moscato d’Asti: A lightly-sparkling, golden-colored wine produced in the northwestern Piedmont region, Moscato d’Asti comes from Muscat à Petits Grains and is the most recognizable variety. A low alcohol content (5.5% ABV), lightly-sweet flavor, and soft, gentle bubbles (frizzante in Italian) make Moscato d’Asti a popular aperitif or dessert wine pairing.

What are the best foods to pair with Moscato?

The secret to pairing any wine with food is balance. Moscato is sweet, so ideally you should pair it with foods possessing opposite flavor profiles—spicy, sour, salty, bitter. While its sweet fruity essence can make it difficult to pair with a main course, Moscato is perfect with appetizers, sweet brunch dishes, dessert, and alone as an aperitif.

COURTNEY, TASTING EDITOR — TENUTE IL BOSCO ‘OLTRENERO CRUASÉ,’ OLTREPO PAVESE, LOMBARDY

I spent a whirlwind three days in Tuscany with the Zonin family this week, and if that wasn’t enough to put me in a state of bliss, this glass of sparkling rosé handed to me upon arriving in the hilltop village of Radda in Chianti certainly was. A traditional-method bubbly from the northern Italian region of Oltrepo Pavese, it was clean and citrus-driven, with highlights of fresh strawberry – a perfect pairing with cobblestone-lined streets and Tuscan sunsets.

Vine Pair – Most Popular Moscato Wine Brands in the World

By | News | No Comments

By Vine Pair

What’s fizzy, frothy, and provides the perfect amount of sweetness when the craving strikes? That’s right, we’re talking about Moscato. Made from the Muscat family of grapes, Moscato (known as Moscatel in Spain) has a flavor profile that ranges all over the spectrum, from bone dry to syrupy sweet.

However, the Moscatos that we Americans are most accustomed to are those light, effervescent bottles brimming with sweet sparkles. Despite the negative hype, the wine is actually more loved than you might think. According to Wine Searcher, the year-to-date figure for Moscato searches stands at 273,261, while Prosecco stands at a significantly lower 128,615. That’s a ton of demand!

ZONIN PRIMO AMORE MOSCATO

Zonin Primo Amore Moscato

Unlike most Italian Moscatos, Zonin’s bottling comes from the warmer southern region of Puglia. While most Moscatos sit at about 5% ABV, Zonin’s sits at a slightly higher 7% ABV. Hey, that 2% makes a difference on those occasional rough days at work!

Huffpost – What Winemakers Want You To Know About Virginia’s Wine Renaissance

By | News | No Comments

By Huffpost

I arrive in Charlottesville before noon on a pristine spring day, the rolling green hills a far cry from where I started my morning, before sunrise in an Uber to JFK. I’m here to learn about Virginia’s unique wine culture. My first guide is Gabriele Rausse, an old school Italian winemaker known as the father of Virginia’s modern wine renaissance.

My image of an intimidating wine expert evaporates upon meeting Rausse. With a laidback demeanor that is standard fare around here, Rausse offers to take me on a tour of the surrounding vineyards, and soon we are cruising along winding country roads in his 1979 Mercedes. Rausse begins to unfurl Virginia’s wine history. From the canopy of sun-dappled maples to the rolling hills dotted with vineyards, I am struck by the lushness of Virginia’s countryside.

Vintage Roots

Like most American success stories, Virginia has had to crush a variety of obstacles on its 400 year path to becoming a respected winemaking region. In the early 1600s, the first colonists tried to cultivate the area’s native vines to produce a cash crop, but ongoing attempts were thwarted by the region’s diverse climate.

By the 1770s, European winemakers were commissioned to try their luck with planting the European Vitis vinifera outside of Williamsburg, but even the experts couldn’t achieve a successful harvest. Construction began at Monticello, and along with Jefferson’s grand vision for a mountaintop estate, the founding father ensured that wine would always have a legacy in Virginia.

Rausse and I head back to Monticello to walk around the grounds where Jefferson planted 330 varieties of fruits and vegetables, along with two vineyards in which he planted 24 varieties of grapes sloping down the mountainside. Jefferson’s original crops didn’t survive, but he continued to establish wine as an important part of Virginia’s culture by importing more than 400 bottles from Europe a year to serve at Monticello’s famous dinner parties. He even installed dumbwaiters from the wine cellar to the dining room to keep the vino flowing without interruption.

Modern Revival

Modern Revival

Rausse and I stop to admire the tight green clusters of grapes now flourishing in Jefferson’s original vineyard. Overseeing Monticello’s grounds and gardens for the past 22 years, Rausse has brought Jefferson’s dream to fruition by restoring the vineyards with several of the original vine varieties that Jefferson planted back in 1807. Several vintages produced from these grapes are now sold in Monticello’s Museum Shop, including a crisp Chardonnay and Bordeaux-style blends.

We pause to take in the spectacular panoramic view of the Piedmont and Blue Ridge Mountains that unfurl beyond Jefferson’s vineyards, where 30 wineries welcome guests along the Monticello Wine Trail.  All these wineries are located within 25 miles of Charlottesville, making this a great destination for wine lovers to enjoy tastings, wine festivals, live music, or just soak in the beauty of the Virginia’s countryside.

Jefferson laid roots for winemaking in Virginia, but it wasn’t until the 1970s that Virginia’s winemaking really took off. Looking to expand internationally, Italian winemaker Gianni Zonin bought a parcel of land outside of Charlottesville, taking a risk on a region where many had failed. He sent his vineyard manager, Gabriele Rausse, to find a fresh solution to get the wine flowing in Virginia.

Upon arriving in Virginia in 1976, Rausse was up against a healthy dose of skepticism from locals, who assured him that pinot noir could not be grown in Charlottesville. But these challenges invigorated him: “Before I came, I checked the climate of Charlottesville, and it was exactly the same climate of my town in Italy. So I said, why shouldn’t it grow here?”

Over the next six years, Rausse cultivated the fields of what is now Barboursville Vineyards, becoming the first vintner to successfully plant Vitis vinifera in the region. And in the spirit of generosity that Virginia seems to cultivate, Rausse shared his trade secrets with other local vintners. The number of wineries in Virginia steadily grew from a handful in 1980 to more than 300 today.

The Vineyards at Monticello

Like all great winemakers, Rausse let the land guide him. He realized that the grafting process had to be perfect to survive the region’s drastic seasonal changes. And when it comes to climate, Rausse tells me that “Virginia does whatever she wants.” While growers in California can rely on a mostly stable climate with temperate growing conditions, in Virginia, “there’s no year that the climate is the same.”

This is how underdog stories go. Every time the climate or seasonal variation throws a new challenge at Virginia’s winemakers, they adapt, and it’s this spirit of innovation that has allowed Virginian viticulture to thrive. With a harvest season that runs according to Mother Nature’s whims, the result is constant experimentation. For wine lovers, that means discovering a new and unique flavor profile with every visit to Virginia’s wineries.

History Preserved and Perfected

I climb into Paschina’s SUV and we make our way along sloping hillsides covered in neat rows of vines. Paschina tells me about the 18 varieties of grapes they have planted, and how even small changes in the slope can lead to hugely different yields. In his 27 years at the helm of Barboursville, he has grown the vineyard from 45 acres to almost 200, and launched a tasting room and restaurant that welcomes 80,000 visitors per year. Paschina is particularly excited about the burgeoning interest in aged red wines in Virginia, and the tasting room features a large collection of older vintages, offering yet another draw for wine connoisseurs.

The vineyard’s bestselling wine is called Octagon, a harmonious blend of Bordeaux, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot with a smooth-bodied finish. The wine is enhanced by its historical connections, with the name Octagon chosen in honor of the octagonal shaped dining room of James Barbour’s mansion, whose ruins flank the inn on the Barboursville property. Designed by Jefferson, the mansion burned to the ground in 1884.

Winemakers are preservationists, and Zonin has instituted an ongoing restoration process to shore up the crumbling ruins from further disrepair. With their stately brick remains coexisting peacefully with the bucolic countryside, the ruins are a sight to behold, and yet another reason to add Barboursville to your next wine tour itinerary.

I am staying the night at the 1804 Inn, adjacent to the ruins and built a century before. I’ve got the Vineyard Cottage all to myself, and the quaint 18th century dwelling is perfect for travelers seeking tranquility and privacy. I take a stroll to the ruins before turning in for the night, thinking that Jefferson would be pleased at how things turned out around here.

The 1804 Inn & Cottages

Laidback Luxury

The next morning I drive back toward Monticello, where I am meeting Kirsty Harmon, winemaker and manager at Blenheim Vineyards. Whereas Barboursville is steeped in history, Blenheim takes a more casual and contemporary approach to wines. “The nice thing about Virginia wineries is that every single place you go is going to be radically different than the next,” said Harmon. Visitors to Blenheim are encouraged to bring the whole family to enjoy music festivals, food trucks, and tastings at the 30-acre vineyard.

Blenheim is owned by musician Dave Matthews, who designs new bottle labels every year. Harmon says that some visitors come because of Dave Matthews, and learn a bit about wine in the process, and some come for the wine and learn about the Dave Matthews connection.

The vibe at Blenheim may be laid back, but its wines are rooted in Harmon’s deep scientific knowledge of winemaking. As one of only 20 or so female winemakers in Virginia, Harmon got her footing in the industry when she met Gabriele Rausse, who became her mentor. She’s been running Blenheim since 2008, and in that time has seen a huge increase in wine tourism. Blenheim welcomes 45,000 visitors a year for tastings.

True to her vineyard’s laid back vibe, Harmon creates wines that are fruit forward and approachable, meant for everyday drinking: “We try to present wine in an approachable but laid back way. Wine can get very intimidating and stuffy, but it doesn’t have to be that.”

My wine journey is nearing its end. I’ve learned firsthand that a spirit of generosity is as much a part of the winemaker’s job as a deeply ingrained knowledge of the land, from its history to its soil composition. Jefferson runs deep around here.

But the wineries of Virginia aren’t just bringing Jefferson’s dreams full circle; they’re also taking Virginia’s wine culture into bold new territory, where laid back and luxurious can coexist, making Charlottesville the perfect weekend destination for both newcomers and wine aficionados alike.

Experience the rich flavors of Virginia’s wines for yourself. Check out Virginia Tourism for a guide to the best wineries around the state and plan your next trip to relax in the laid back luxury of Virginia’s beautiful vineyards. Because Virginia is for wine lovers!

Crave Local – What to Drink Now Thirteen Wines For Summer Sipping

By | News | No Comments

By Crave Local

Well, it’s official! Summer is finally upon us, temperatures in the South are soaring, and the universe is about to be dominated by rosé wine Instagram hashtags: #roseallday, #yeswayrose, #roseseason, #roseyay, and on and on.

Snapchats and pictures will overflow with all things pink, beach, poolside, and probably a few odd looking adult floaties with rainbows and unicorns. Beyond our now rosé colored world, however, summer also means grilling season, and along with that, an entire plethora of options for wine pairings and flavor combinations.

This year, we’re sharing our favorite red wines, white, and yes…rosé selections that can take you through summer and beyond.

So, grab a glass, pop a bottle, and let’s get to sipping with Crave Local’s top wine picks for summer!

Summer Red Wine Picks

wine review caroso montepulciano dabruzzo riserva

Caroso Montepulciano D’Abruzzo DOP Riserva 2016, Italy – SRP $22

A big bold red that’s sure to please, Caroso’s Montepulciano is a good choice for gift giving this summer. A dark, ruby red in the glass, this Italian red wine is earthy on the nose, with cassis and dark berries. The palate opens to black mulberry, red raspberry, dried plums, and spice. Medium bodied with a dry, tannic finish, this wine will pair very well with game meats, steaks on the grill, or portabello mushrooms with mozzarella cheese, tomatoes, and balsamic basil dressing. Drink now through 2020, 90 points.

Castello dii Albola CHIANTI CLASSICO

Castello Di Albola, 2013 Chianti DOCG, Italy – SRP $19

Hand-picked, and then carefully fermented in the traditional skin-on method, Castello di Albola, chooses the best Sangiovese and Canaiolo grapes for their Chianti Classico, creating  red wine that’s called for rich, meaty pairings and full flavored dishes. The nose is soft and elegant, with dried cherries and leather on the ruby red rim. The palate is elegant and refined, with more bright cherry notes, lemon zest, and spice. Clean, and fruit forward, drink this Italian red with smoked sausages on the grill, or a big, juicy steak. Drink now through 2019, 90 points.

kosher wine reviews psagot peak

Kosher Psagot PEAK 2014, Jerusalem Mountains, Israel – SRP $50

You might not think of Jerusalem as the ideal terroir for growing wine, but trust us when we say, that could not be further from the truth. Some of the best wines are currently being grown and imported from Israel, and Psagot’s PEAK red blend is a stellar example of just that. Made from three French varietals – Syrah, Petit Syrah, and a touch of Mourvèdre, it’s a dry, smoky beast that’s a great pairing with filet mignon-definitely one of our favorite top wine picks for summer.

Deep and inky in color, the palate on this Kosher wine exhibits flavors of dark berries, tobacco, and leather, with a full body, long legs, and medium tannins. A round mouthfeel and balanced acidity also make it the perfect partner for beef roasts and aged cheeses.

Drink now through 2019, 90 points.

Summer White Wine Picks

Ciu-Ciu Merlettaie Pecorino

Ciu Ciu Merlettaie, Offida Pecorino DOCG, Offida, Italy – SRP $19

Like the ancient art of bobbin lace-making in Offida, Italy, the Pecorino grape is slowing beginning to make a comeback. Thought to be nearly extinct for many years, wild vines were found in the Marche region, and are now flourishing throughout the country. Merlettaie’s Pecorino is aged 6 months on the lees in oak, and creating a dry wine with a fresh, citrus and melon-like bouquet, medium body, and a nice minerality. Green melon, crisp apple, and a bit of vanilla thanks to the oak make this a great summer wine.

Think of it like Pinot Grigio’s bigger brother, and pair it with anything you’d normally choose a Sauv Blanc for, like poultry, fish, or vegetarian dishes. Drink now through 2019, 91 points

Snowbirds Vintners Grüner Veltliner Wine white

Snowbirds Vintners Grüner Veltliner 2015, SRP $18

Generally found in Austria, Grüner Veltliner is a crisp wine varietal that pairs unusually well with difficult foods like artichokes and asparagus. Although we’re big fans of Austrian wines, Snowbirds version is a bit more built for the American palate. With green apple, tropical fruits, and grapefruit zest on the finish, it’s an easy going white wine that showcases Washington State’s volcanic soil minerality, and bright, fresh flavors.

Although Chef McFadden intended for Snowbirds to be paired with food, their all American Grüner drinks quite well on its own. Pair it with lemon cod, scallops, or of course, asparagus and artichoke salad. Drink now through 2018, 90 points.

Sauvignon Blanc Wine

Sterling Vineyards  Sauvignon Blanc 2015, Napa Valley – SRP $10-18

For many years, Sterling Vineyards has established itself as a leader in wine production, dominating both national and international wine sales for the region.  Their latest rebrand is an upgrade to the original matte white wine label design, adding a shimmery silver embossed label to most of their varietals. ( A nice touch if you need a last minute hostess gift.)

Our team was provided with a sample of their 2015 Sterling Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc and new package design for review, and noted they had also adjusted their flavor profile. Soft on the palate, this vintage is aged with 85% of the blend in stainless steel, and the remaining 15% in neutral French oak, creating what might be described as a cross over between buttery Napa Chardonnay and traditionally crisp, dry Sauvignon Blanc. Notes of stone fruits, p ear, and citrus are present, as well as a creamy, and slightly sweet finish.

Pair it with a peach tart or lighter barbecue fare for an easy going, summer sipper. Drink now, 87 points

Pinot Grigio Wine Reviews Tommasi

Tommasi Le Rosse Pinot Grigio 2015, Veneto, Italy – SRP $17

Back on our list, for the second year in a row, is Tommasi Le Rosse Pinot Grigio. Although we’re not usually big fans of Pinot Grigio (unfortunately, many mass produced Pinot Grigio’s lack flavor and substance), this is one of our top picks and best buys for summer wines!

Vinified in stainless steel tanks for four months, Tommasi’s 2015 Pinot Grigio is a pale straw yellow with a chartreuse rim. Clean and grassy on the nose, this wine showcases a medium body with lemon peel, white citrus flower, and white peach on the palate, ending with a crisp, dry finish that makes it perfect for summer food pairings. Pair it with shellfish, light appetizers, or aged sheep’s milk gouda. A refreshing, top wine pick for summer!

Drink now through 2018, 91 points.

Summer Rosé Wine Picks

Carmel Road Barrymore Rose Wine

Barrymore by Carmel Road Rosé of Pinot Noir 2016, Monterey County – SRP $23

From actress Drew Barrymore and winemaker Kris Kato, this Monterey County rosé is as delicate and fresh as one would expect.

Crisp and fruity on the palate, this 100% Pinot Noir wine exhibits notes of red berries, white peach, and apricot, along with sweet orange and citrus flower on the nose. A nice, balanced acidity, this rosé will pair well with shellfish, Asian-inspired dishes, and grilled vegetables like zucchini or romaine hearts with a Dijon vinaigrette dressing.

Drink now through early 2018, 89 points

whispering angel

Chateau d’Esclans Rosé Whispering Angel 2016, Provence – SRP $19

Years ago, we met Sacha Lichine on the rooftop of a hotel overlooking the Atlantic ocean, as he was making his US debut with Whispering Angel. As ‘heavenly’ now as it was then, the Château d’Esclans estate and winery produces some of the world’s leading rosé wines. The portfolio includes four premium rosés with an array of depth and flavor.

Blended from Grenache, Rolle (Vermintino), and Cinsault grapes, it is delicate and floral, with silky berries contrasting with bright grapefruit and citrus.  Whispering Angel remains dry and crisp, with Provence’s noted minerality and finish. It’s the perfect choice for drinking poolside, or with ceviche on the patio. Drink now through 2018, 92 points.

Marques de Riscal Rosado rose wine

Marqués de Riscal Rosado 2015, Rioja, Spain – SRP $10

A lively salmon-pink in color, this Tempranillo and Garnacha varietal rosé is a simple, quaffable wine, at an affordable price. A mild growing season with no extreme heat or cold allowed the vines to flourish, creating a bumper crop harvest for the winery.

With bright raspberry and wild strawberry flavors on the palate, look for notes of white flower and papaya on the nose. Light tannins are present, along with a medium body, and a crisp, clean finish.  Pair it with grilled shrimp on the barbecue, salmon cakes, or creamy pasta dishes.

Drink young, through 2017, 88 points.

Psagot Rose Bottle

Psagot Rosé 2016, Jerusalem, Israel (Kosher Wine) – SRP $20

Keep kosher for summer with this bright little gem from Psagot’s 2016 late summer rosé.

Made in the saignée method, winemaker Yaacov Oryah blended Merlot and Syrah together for initial fermentation, then added in a separate lot of Petite Sirah later into the fermentation process.  As is typical of Israeli wines, high minerality was present, accentuating the dark berries and wild strawberry notes, as well as dried cranberries, grapefruit zest, and a hint of salinity.

Don’t expect a pale, whispery rosé here, as this one definitely skews toward a fuller body and bigger flavors. Pairing recommendations are salmon on the grill with a lemon sauce, panko crusted pork chops, or a sour orange tart.

Drink now through 2018, 91 points

Snowbirds 2016 Rose Bottle white

Snowbirds Vintners Rosé 2016, Lake Chelan AVA – SRP $18

Jam out this summer with all American rosé Snowbirds Vintners! A brand new portfolio, created by Chef Jamie McFadden and winemaker Norm Saley to make food pairings easier, their newest release is a Rhône-style rosé from the Lake Chelan AVA, in Washington State.

Shimmering salmon in color, this juicy, fruit forward rosé exhibits bright aromas of wild strawberries and melon, as well as citrus flower on the nose. Comprised of Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Syrah varietals, the palate is peach jam and strawberries, with mouthwatering acidity, and a crisp, mineral finish. Quaffable is an understatement, as the Snowbirds team poured over three cases of the rosé at a recent wine event in Orlando, making it clearly apparent that Snowbirds is THE choice for summer rosé wine! Drink this one in your Corksicle wine chiller at the beach, poolside, or on a boat with friends.

Chef Jamie McFadden, Proprietor of Snowbirds Vintners, recommends pairing Snowbirds 2016 Rosé with smoked corn, queso fresco, and avocado toasts, or golden fried chicken.

Drink now through 2018, 90 points.

Villa Gemma Cerasuolo

Villa Gemma Cerasuelo D’Abruzzo DOC, Italy – SRP $19

Not quite a red, not quite  rosé, this 100% Montepulciano summer wine is a unique one, no doubt. Intense on the palate with flavors of pomegranate, black cherry preserves, and spice, and a nose of violets and dark berries, you can serve is chilled, or take it out of the fridge about a half hour before serving to allow the wine to open a bit more. Pair this one with grilled pizza, portabella topped burgers, or cold cuts and aged cheeses. Drink now, 89 points.

Whatever your wine choice, don’t be afraid to switch it up, and throw the rules out the window. After all, if rosé can be ‘all day’, there’s no reason you can’t drink pink, white, or even red wine during summer months

Castello del Poggio

Hoboken Live – The Sweet (Wine) Life Comes to Hoboken

By | News | No Comments

By Hoboken Live

Being a writer for Hoboken Life is certainly a tough existence, especially when you’re forced to attend parties where you have free cocktails and finger foods forced upon you, as recently happened when Castello del Poggio threw a party at the W Hotel in Hoboken recently to celebrate the release of their new “Sweet Collection” of wines.

If the name Castello del Poggio is familiar, it might be because they currently offer the best-selling Italian Moscato in the U.S. at a time when Moscato is rising in popularity, in part due to the wine’s popularity among A-list rappers like Drake. When your product is being mentioned in every other song on the charts, the time is ripe to expand—and that’s exactly what Castello del Poggio is doing. They’re leveraging the popularity of their Moscato to launch their Sweet Collection, adding four more sweet Italian wine varieties—a Rosé, a Rosso Dolce, a Prosecco, and a sparkling Moscato.

To get the word out, Castello del Poggio took over the Lulu’s nightclub at the W Hotel for a cocktail party—because their sweet wines are for far more than dessert.

The Wine Cocktails

Now, I’m not much of a sweet wine drinker, and like a lot of people I tend to associate sweet wines with dessert wines. What I learned at the Castello del Poggio party was that their new Sweet Collection doesn’t have to be sipped on its own—thought they are delicious—but can be the basis for a wide range of crisp, light, refreshing summer cocktails. These wines are low alcohol and combine well with a big list of mixers and are meant to be served chilled—all the ingredients for the sort of cocktail you can sip all day long while grilling in the backyard or hosting a party on your deck.

The Wine Cocktails

Naturally, we were given the opportunity to try a bunch of cocktails made from Castello del Poggio’s Sweet Collection. Our favorite? The Eternal Brunch:

Eternal Brunch

  • 3 oz Castello del Poggio Rosé
  • 1 oz distilled gin
  • 1/2 oz lychee liqueur
  • 1/8 oz Velvet Falernum
  • 1/2 oz lemon juice
  • 2 dashes Peychaud’s Bitters

Served over ice with a twist, that is one delicious cocktail, kids. Another fave was the Guilty Pleasure, made with Castello del Poggio Prosecco, sake, and blackberry puree, also served over ice with a twist.

 Summertime and Chill

I’d never considered sweet wine as a cocktail base before, to be honest, beyond the traditional forays into mimosas and other champagne-based “brunchy” drinks. I have to admit that Castello del Poggio is onto something here with their “sweet life” marketing, as the summer is the perfect time to ditch heavier drinks in favor of something light and cooling like these.

So, if you’re curious about Moscato or other sweet wines, or looking to augment your cocktail game, check out the new Sweet Collection from Castello del Poggio. Because if they can convince this whiskey-loving Hobokenite to try sweet wines, there must be something to it all.

Tucked away in the sizzling NoMad neighborhood stands a stately hotel formerly known as The Martha Washington — a historic property that once served as a women-only sanctuary for boss babes of a bygone era (think Veronica Lake and Louise Brooks). Today, in a revamped version of its former self, the hotel is known as The Redbury, and THE STAYCATIONERS called it home for a night.

THE SPOT: The Redbury Hotel | 29 E. 29th Street, New York, NY

THE STATS: 256 guest rooms, iPrefer guest loyalty program, visually stimulating walls dripping in music history, Roman-Italian cibo aplenty at MARTA

PERFECT FOR: embracing female empowerment in this hotel’s safe space roots

When in Marta, do as the Romans do. And because no staycationer can check in on an empty stomach, the crew (joined by the one and only Georgia Grace) sat down for a veritable weekend feast of pizza, wood-fired grill specialties, and spritzes, basking in the natural light-filled glamour that veils the space.

Shanken News Daily – Led By Italy And New Zealand, Premium Plus Imported Wines Are Surging

By | News | No Comments

By Shanken News Daily

While overall imported table wine depletions were flat at 67 million cases in the U.S. last year, according to Impact Databank, the category’s premium end is painting a much brighter picture. In 2016, the U.S. market’s top 10 premium plus imports—defined as being at least $10 a 750ml., on average—collectively posted a 12.6% gain to nearly 8.3 million cases. A bevy of upscale Italian offerings, as well as several super premium New Zealand brands, have helped drive the segment’s rapid progress.

Riboli Family Wine Estates’ Stella Rosa brand—the market leader among premiumplus imports—surpassed 1.3 million cases last year. The Italian range, best known for its sweet and semisweet taste profiles, has averaged about 28% annual growth since 2010. Also hailing from Italy is Constellation’s Ruffino, which is fast closing in on the million-case mark (excluding its Prosecco, which accounts for another 300,000 cases). The brand’s success has been built on its Chianti business, which comprises about a 20% share of the Chianti category and nearly half the luxury Chianti segment.

Other leading premiumplus Italian players include E.&J. Gallo’s Ecco Domani and Santa Margherita USA’s namesake range, both of which were flat last year. On the other hand, Palm Bay’s Roscato and Zonin USA’s Castello del Poggio are both clearly in expansion mode, with each carving out well over 20% growth in 2016. “We’re pretty confident Roscato is going to be our next million-case brand,” says Palm Bay president and CEO Marc Taub.

Meanwhile, the New Zealand category continues to thrive stateside, with segment leader Kim Crawford eclipsing the million-case mark last year. “We see great growth opportunity for Kim Crawford in the on premise by the glass segment,” says Julie Rossman, marketing director, imports at Constellation. Currently, Kim Crawford does more than 80% of its business off premise. Fellow Kiwi player Oyster Bay also continues to rise by double digits, and Kim Crawford portfolio mate Nobilo is likewise benefiting from the buzz around New Zealand, surpassing 600,000 cases on nearly 10% growth last year.

While Italy and New Zealand clearly dominate the premium top 10, by the end of the year Australia’s 19 Crimes could also potentially join the fold. The Treasury Wine Estates label doubled in size to more than a half-million cases in the U.S. last year, and TWE CEO Michael Clarke recently told SND that further extensions to the upscale Aussie brand are on the way.

Vine Pair – The 7 Best Wines for Pizza Under $20

By | News | No Comments

By Vine Pair

Is there any better way to spend an evening than at home in sweatpants, gorging on pizza and chugging wine? It goes without saying that wine and pizza are hands down the two greatest things in the entire world and, when put together, are downright heavenly. Whether pizza & wine is your weekly friend-night ritual or your solo decompression activity, there’s no better way to unwind than with a slice of cheesy pizza and a glass of delicious wine. We’ve gathered up seven of our favorite bottles to pair with that pie when the night simply calls for some quality R&R.

THE CHOOK SPARKLING SHIRAZ NV

The 7 Best Pizza Wines for Under $20This might just be the best pizza and wine pairing of all time. This sparkling red wine, produced in the méthode champenoise, bursts with flavors of ripe black fruit, playing deliciously off the sauce/cheese combination on your pizza. Fizzy and funky, this wine is simply delightful. Fun fact: “Chook” means chicken in Australia. Average Price: $19

CASTELLO DI ALBOLA CHIANTI CLASSICO 2013

The 7 Best Pizza Wines for Under $20This Sangiovese-based wine is exactly what you’d want out of your Chianti Classico: bright, rich flavors of red fruit, with underlying notes of earth and spice. This Tuscan treat is an unbeatable match with red sauce, plus, it’s super affordable. Average Price: $16

LINI LAMBRUSCO ‘LABRUSCA’ ROSSO NV

The 7 Best Pizza Wines for Under $20We love the fizzy, frothy mouthfeel of this deliciously fruity wine. Its bright fruit flavors and zippy acidity cut right through the fatty cheese atop your pizza. Bonus point: This bottle will hold up to nearly any topping with which you decide to decorate your pizza. Average Price: $16

TRIVENTO AMADO SUR MALBEC 2014

The 7 Best Pizza Wines for Under $20This Argentinian blend dominated by Malbec shows rich, dark berry flavors with notes of spice. With about 10 percent each of Bonarda and Syrah, the blend displays a layered, textured complexity — at an extremely low price. Seriously, this bottle is a steal. Average Price: $14

CHÂTEAU LA CANORGUE LUBERON ROUGE 2015

The 7 Best Pizza Wines for Under $20This biodynamically farmed blend from the Rhone valley is spicy and delicious. Dark ripe fruit with notes of tobacco dominate the palate, with background notes of underbrush and garrigue. This Syrah-dominant blend, meshed with 30 percent Grenache and 10 percent old vine Carignan and Mourvedre, is a perfect pairing for pizza with all your favorite meat toppings, such as sausage and pepperoni. Average Price: $15

BACKSBERG PINOTAGE 2015

The 7 Best Pizza Wines for Under $20What used to be a grape varietal with an extremely bad reputation has created a serious name for itself over the last 10 years. This crossing of Cinsault and Pinot Noir has become South Africa’s “signature” grape. Backsberg’s expression is dark and ripe, yet maintains a solid freshness that is splendid with pizza. Average price: $13

JULES TAYLOR PINOT NOIR 2015

The 7 Best Pizza Wines for Under $20As much as we love our Pinots from France and the U.S., it sometimes causes us to forget just how much incredible Pinot Noir is being made in New Zealand. Jules Taylor presents a full-bodied Pinot, rich in jammy dark fruit flavors, dotted with light spicy notes of oak. Alongside vegetable toppings, especially mushrooms and peppers, this wine shines. Average Price: $21 — but definitely worth that extra buck.

Marco Style – How to Build a Bubbles Bar

By | News | No Comments

By Marco Style

Staying in for New Year’s Eve this year? Or planning a New Year’s Day brunch, regular brunch, or any other party worthy of one awesome celebration? An easy and trendy way to add flair to a party at home is to build a Bubbles Bar. Lay out an eye-catching spread with the right ingredients and let your guests create their own festive libations. It’s actually pretty simple as long as you snag the right ingredients. Here’s what you need:

The Bubbly: Prosecco

Quick lesson for anyone wondering why I chose to use the term “bubble bar” over “champagne bar”: champagne refers specifically to sparkling wine that has undergone a secondary fermentation in the bottle and been created in the Champagne region of France. Because the region is so specific and known for creating the world’s best sparkling wines, even inexpensive champagne can be pretty expensive at around $40-$50 per bottle. Not to mention, the distinctive yeasty, toasty, delicious flavors champagne is known for will be lost when your friends layer it with fruit, other liquors, and whatever other fun stuff you provide.

With that in mind, I suggest you go with something lighter and more economical: prosecco! Italy’s sparkling wine, which is made from the glera grape, is generally delicate and well balanced, perfect for drinking alone or mixing with other flavors for a satisfying sparkling wine cocktail. Plus, you can score quality bottles for between $10 and $15. Perfect!

Zonin Prosecco is my go-to for parties because the flavors are subtle but pleasant with notes of white peach and almond. Plus, the average price of around $14 won’t break the bank. It’s perfectly pleasing alone, but also a nice base for layering flavors in sparkling wine drinks. You can find Zonin Proscecco in Richmond at Wegmans, the Robious Road Total Wine, and some local Krogers including Willow Lawn. If you’re outside Richmond it’s available at all Harris Teeters and most Wegmans. If you’re buying for a party, make sure to check for discounts as some of these stores offer percentages off if you purchase 6 or 12 bottles.

The Recipes

While I do like including plenty of ingredients that make it easy to improvise cocktails, I also suggest including a few specific recipes for guests who might need some inspiration. Sure, you can just print them out, but I decided to make mine festive. In order to have something that stood up, I wrote them on place cards. In addition, while I did place a few jiggers around for fastidious guests who wanted to precisely mix ingredients, I tried to make most recipes fool-proof enough to be created without exact measurements to make the process more relaxed and fun.

I supplied an array of recipes, but these are a few of my favorites:

Tried and True Classic Sparkling Wine Cocktails

  • A Goodnight Kiss
  • Splash Campari
  • Sugar Cube
  • 2-3 dashes Angostura Bitters
  • Prosecco to fill

  • Kir Royale
  • 1 finger Crème de Cassis (more if you like sweet drinks)
  • Prosecco to fill

  • Traditional Champagne Cocktail
  • 1 sugar cube
  • 2-3 dashes Angostura Bitters
  • 1 lemon peel
  • Prosecco to fill

Marco Style Original Prosecco Cocktails:

  • Chez Megan (feel free to swap in your name, I won’t tell)
  • Generous splash Carpano Antica Formula
  • 1 clementine/cutie slice
  • Bubbles to fill

*This is one of my favorite concoctions and I’ve served it as a welcome drink at parties in the past. Carpano Antica Formula is a full-bodied sweet Italian vermouth with notes of fig, dried cherries, gingerbread and orange peel. You should be able to find it at your local liquor store. It adds a rich spicy note to the sparkling wine, then the orange slice brightens up the mixture. When I serve it myself I add orange peel or muddle the slice a bit to bring out the flavor, but for build-your-own, dropping it in works just fine.

New Year’s Eve Flower

  • Big splash St-Germain
  • Small splash saffron simple syrup (buy here or make your own)
  • Orange Peel
  • Prosecco to fill

The Mixers

This depends first (of course) on any recipes you choose and secondly on the time of day. For a brunch or daytime gathering you’ll want to focus on juices, lemonades, gourmet sodas, and other choices that won’t make your beverages too boozy. You’ll want to include some of these in the evening as well, but you can also add a few more boozy options.

Favorite choices for any time of day:

Pomegranate Juice: A nice alternative to OJ at brunch, but also a classy mixer in the evening. Also blends quite flavorfully with…

St-Germain: Although it’s a liqueur, with its floral flavors St-Germain makes a lovely addition to brunch or evening drinks as well. Plus, the bottle immediately takes your display up a notch.

Ginger Juice/Ale: This can pep up juice-based bevvies at brunch or add depth to more cocktail-focused evening choices.

For Daytime Bubbles Bars:

Orange Juice: It’s a standard, you have to do it. Go fresh-squeezed to impress your guests.

Pineapple Juice: Quality is key here. Look for a cold-pressed variety in the organic section of the store.

Gourmet Lemonade: You know, the kind in the pretty glass bottles.

Peach or Mango Puree: If you can’t find this in the juice aisle, it’s sometimes also located in the Hispanic or organic section of the grocery store. It’s a necessity for another classic sparkling wine favorite: the bellini.

Sorbet: Replace juice with a scoop of fruit-flavored sorbet for another fun take on a bubbly bevvy.

Evening Bubbles Bars:

Vermouth: This can also work during daytime. Any variety of sweet vermouth plays nice with prosecco. Ask for assistance choosing one in your local wine or liquor store.

Amaro: The Italian word for “bitter,” Amari (the plural of Amaro) are bitter Italian liqueurs. They can be sipped alone before or after a meal, but many are often also served mixed with sparkling wine in spritzes, so I like including one on a sparkling wine bar as well. Common varieties include Campari, Aperol and Cynar. Sparkling wine drinks made with these will please guests who don’t love sweet cocktails.

Bitters: Angostura Bitters is the classic called for in many sparkling wine cocktail recipes, but don’t be afraid to experiment with other varieties. Orange, cherry, and other flavors add another layer of complexity to your drinks.

Crème de Cassis: Another solid brunch option too, this sweet liqueur that’s made from black currants is a key ingredient in the classic French Kir Royale.

Consider investing in matching carafes you can label to make juices look uniform and appealing.

Garnishes

Again, some of this will be determined by any recipes you choose, but my classics include:

  • – Sugar Cubes
  •  Fresh fruit (berries, mandarin slices, pomegranate seeds. Make sure anything you choose will actually fit into the glasses you are providing).
  • Fruit peels if needed

Glasses

If you don’t own (or want to wash) a ton of flutes, make sure to check the Dollar Tree when choosing glassware. I was able to purchase high-quality plastic champagne flutes at two for a dollar. The bottoms were secure, they looked pretty, and I was able to throw them away at the end of the night. Total win! You also might look there or at a party store for small bowls to hold your other garnishes. Anything pretty and disposable makes post-party cleanup easier.

Other Fun, Festive Items

I picked up my sparkly star cocktail stirrers at a store-closing sale and my guests went crazy for them. Consider grabbing something like these, festive patterned straws, cocktail picks, or other items to take your display up a notch. Similarly, don’t forget pretty beverage napkins. I also scored my “but first, champagne” sign at Francesca’s on a buy-one-get-one half off sale. I think it adds to the festive look, even if it does say champagne.

ZONIN1821’s flagship brands, Zonin Prosecco and Castello del Poggio, have received this prestigious achievement for remarkable sales growth and performance in the U.S. marketplace by M. The meeting is organized by Magis, the first and most advanced experiment of sustainable viticulture in Italy, and one of the most advanced in the world, thanks to its technical-scientific committee, composed of important Universities, Research Centres, Professional Associations, wine companies and an independent Certification Institute, DNV Business Assurance. After having verified with DNV the capability of the first Magis companies to adopt a complex sustainability protocol, the convention will be the occasion to celebrate the goal achieved by the first 18 major sustainability labels recognized by the over 100 companies partners of Magis. All the

bottles of these wines, so different according to their origin area, taste and character, have now a common added value by the sustainability stamp Magis. Two Casa Vinicola Zonin wines are among the 18 certified wines: Tenuta Ca’ Bolani Prosecco Frizzante Doc and Castello d’Albola Il Solatio Toscana Igt.

This is a new important “green” result for our company, that since 2008 has adopted a rigorous sustainable business program .“Now respect and care for the environment are totally part of Casa Vinicola Zonin’s culture and philosophy, making it a leading company in this field”, says Carlo De Biasi, Chief Agronomist at Casa Vinicola Zonin and awarded with the 2013 Green Personality of the Year Award at The Drinks Business Green Awards.

Casa Vinicola Zonin at Prowein 2014

By | Press release | No Comments

Casa Vinicola Zonin at Prowein 2014 (Stand M03, Hall 3) with

New Packaging for Feudo Principi di Butera And New Wines

(Prestige 1821, Velluto, Bardolino Chiaretto and Castello d’Albola Toscana Igt)

Recently honored in New York for his outstanding achievements in the wine world with the “2013 Wine Enthusiast Lifetime Achievement”, Gianni Zonin, Chairman at Casa Vinicola Zonin, underlined the uncontested talent of his family company in creating “wine culture” outside of Italy. With a successful distribution of its quality wines in over 100 countries, Casa Vinicola Zonin shows its ability to stay one step ahead of the market and consumer trends, thanks to its dynamism . At Prowein 2014, highly recognised platform for the presentation of innovations in the wine sector, we introduce to the major key players the following news:

  • Contemporary and Elegant New Packaging for Feudo Principi di Butera: thanks to their top tier wines, the Zonin Family Estate Brands confirmed to be worldwide recognized as a guarantee of high quality, with a mark of modern elegance. In order to convey these unique characteristics in a design, we completely renovated the packaging of Feudo Principi di Butera wines. The new wine packaging of our Sicilian Estate will catch consumers’ eye with its minimal and refined beauty. Furthermore, two new Sicilia Doc wines will be ready for the exhibition in Duesseldorf: a Grillo and a Cru Insolia.
  • Zonin Prestige 1821 Prosecco Docg : this wine was created in response to the increasing demand of a Zonin branded Docg product by the markets where Prosecco has established itself as a category and represents an important market share for the sparkling wines. Prestige 1821, with its fine and persistent perlage, matches our high professional winemaking expertise with an excellent product from Valdobbiadene. The excellent quality and high positioning the product aspires to is expressed by the name, Prestige 1821,which refers to the year Casa Vinicola Zonin was founded too.
  • Zonin Velluto wines: Velluto is a Veneto Igt wine, crafted with a blend of Corvina and Merlot, made memorable by its intense aromas of red cherries and a velvety texture.  Because consumers are limited to the interaction with Velluto’s wine bottle in stores, we decided to present it with a tactile experience. We designed a 3D embossed foil label, with an important visual trigger and an invitation to interact with the bottle. The flowing V of the label represents the lightness of a red velvety sik scarf, and brings life to the whole design. The name Velluto (“Velvet”) is a tribute to the Venetian merchants who popularized the silk trade since Roman times. A Velluto Puglia Igt wine (Primitivo and Negroamaro) will also be presented.
  • Zonin Bardolino Chiaretto: strongly requested by the German market, “Zonin I Classici” line is now enriched by a new Bardolino Chiaretto. The line, synonymous with great value, features the most sought after Italian varietals, internationally. A contemporary, stylish and distinctive design communicates high value and exclusivity without compromising the shelf visibility of the wines.
  • New Castello d’Albola Toscana Igt: born to appeal young consumers, usually unfamiliar with the complexity of red wines from Chianti Classico, this new blend will be an accessible wine, easy to understand, but with the expertise of Castello d’Albola – our award-winning Estate from the heart of the Chianti Classico – behind. A fresh and modern packaging will make it absolutely eye-catching.

Focused on supporting the awareness of Zonin Estates quality wines throughout the best restaurants and top venues of the world, the new Casa Vinicola Zonin’s Prestigious Account Division listed the Estates’ Wines in many Michelin Stars restaurants and was able to create a network with sommeliers of the most exclusive international venues, thanks to innovative and appealing activities formats like Sommelier’s Themed Lunches – where international top sommeliers get together with our people to discuss an interesting theme in a  relaxing atmosphere in a top venue of our most relevant markets – and Gastronomy Experiences – where press and sommeliers experience memorable trips in the Italian Regions where our Estates are located and enjoy top quality tasting menu of our wines and food delicacies from local producers.

Casa Vinicola Zonin winning strategy on the international stage

By | Press release | No Comments

Enduring Success for Zonin Prosecco and Zonin Estates Wines in Usa, Germany and Uk.

Absolutely Innovative Approach to the Chinese Market

At Vinitaly 2013 the family-owned wine company based in Veneto Region celebrates a very positive growth in export sales: 2012 export consolidated turnover of 105 milions Euro demonstrates that Casa Vinicola Zonin export quadrupled in the last five years.

Thanks to a true market oriented approach to international business -“tailoring” custom made business plans for each country – CVZ consolidates its leading position in key markets like Usa, Germany and Uk and constantly increases its presence in Australia, Canada, Switzerland and Russia, with a special interest for the upcoming opportunities of the Chinese market.

Excellent performances must be reported for Zonin Prosecco Doc, a traditional winning horse for Casa Vinicola Zonin: with a global average increase of 16% in 2012, the beloved sparkling wine of the “Italian Lifestyle” conquers Uk and Canada, followed by Germany and Usa. Among Italian Proseccos, Zonin Prosecco has the 7,5 % of market share in USA, 12,5% in Uk and more than 22% in UAE and 40% in Australia!

But Casa Vinicola Zonin’s strength is its multi-branded portfolio with dedicated range to OFF & ON trade and its wide assortment covering all the price segments from daily consumption
to top tier wines: in 2012 the Zonin Family Estate Brands confirmed to be worldwide recognized as a mark and guarantee of high quality, especially referring to the increasing presence on the international stage of Castello del Poggio (Piedmont), Rocca di Montemassi (Maremma), Castello d’Albola (Chianti Classico) and Tenuta Ca Bolani (Friuli). A recent re-organization of the Company’s Export Department was meant to support the awareness of Zonin Estates quality wines throughout the best restaurants and top venues of the world. The new Prestigious Account Division in less than 3 months was able to list the Estates’ Wines in more than 10 Michelin Stars restaurants and create a network with sommeliers of the most exclusive international venues.

A new priority for the internationalization of Casa Vinicola Zonin is the complex Chinese market, consisting of large metropolitan areas as well as the so called “secondary” cities. Despite of the global crisis, China is a constantly expanding market, where sales of wine increased of 21% in 2012. In order to better support its Chinese importers, Casa Vinicola Zonin hired two Country Managers of Chinese nationality in the last months, with the goal of being the ambassadors of the Zonin brand and the Zonin Family Estates brands, values and propositions in China, committing to consumers through the right messages, attitude and positioning. Interest for China dates back in time for Casa Vinicola Zonin: 1996 was the year in which the Company began to explore the Chinese market in a pioneering way and in 2005 it developed G3, a project empowered with Torres family (Spain) and Baron Philippe de Rothschild (France) to promote the excellence of European wines in emerging markets like China through events, tastings and press conferences with the aim of creating a “Old World” system to penetrate the market.

After positioning its wines in the main metropolitan areas, Casa Vinicola Zonin declares its goal of discovering the taste preferences of the upcoming consumers of the “secondary” cities of China. This big Country with vast economic and cultural differences, is characterized by heterogeneous gastronomic traditions and new wine consumption opportunities can be proposed.

Massimo Tuzzi, Chief International Officer of the Company, says “We are conducting an in depth market research on 18 Chinese medium cities to understand the taste of current and potential consumers. Our goal is to be able to anticipate consumers needs in a market that continues to evolve and to propose the most suitable wine for new Chinese wine lovers from the different areas of China. We don’t want to make the mistake of considering China as a great and unique market “.

In an appealing Country where only the 2% of the population currently represents the wine market, Casa Vinicola Zonin wants to conquer new consumers, passing onto them the value of “Made in Italy” high quality. Gambellara, April 7th 2013

Young, Digital and Glocal: Emerging Values at Casa Vinicola Zonin

By | Press release | No Comments

In constant growth, the Company based in the Veneto in 2012 registered + 13% of turnover,

hired staff under 35 years of age, promoted wine culture thanks to social media and

contributed to enhance the wine tourism in 7 Italian Regions

Despite of the critical period for the economy, in 2012 Casa Vinicola Zonin recorded an increase in its turnover of 13% compared to 2011, with 140 million Euros, and the Company proves to be solid, dynamic and in continuous growth:

  • Employment has risen in the last year and 10 young professionals all under 35 years of age were hired in the areas of technical production, marketing, communication, export and financial controlling, paying big attention to educational and workshops for the new recruits.
  • Among other traditional tools to promote the Company’s brands and wine culture, for Casa Vinicola Zonin social media has become a fresh, original and effective way to communicate its values and to relate to consumers in a closer and relaxed environment. Facebook and Twitter target especially young consumers, although it is becoming a common place for a more mature public, as it is seen as an easy, inexpensive way to stay tuned with the world. Constantly updated, our Facebook sites comprehend all our brands, from the institutional Casa Vinicola Zonin, to Zonin Prosecco and all the wineries.
  • Sustaining wine producing areas is a key aspect of Casa Vinicola Zonin’s philosophy and the most recent example of this approach regards Puglia: the Zonin Family acquired Masseria Altemura Estate in 2000 and last October 2012 inaugurated it, after important intervention on the winery and on the landscape. As result of an investment of several million Euros, now Masseria Altemura employees 70 people from the local community in the winery and 130 hectares of vines are cultivated, rediscovering native varieties and techniques.
  • A priority for Casa Vinicola Zonin is also wine tourism. Each Company’s Estate constantly improves its hospitality services, winning a growing number of Italian and International wine lovers, in search of new terroirs, flavors and authentic traditions. The latest figures have pointed out, that wine tourism is strongly increasing, surpassing the $ 5 billion euros in sales in 2012. Zonin is GREEN

By | Press release | No Comments

Casa Vinicola Zonin is more and more involved in Sustainable Viticulture.

New Eco-Activities presented at the upcoming Prowein and Vinitaly

Respect and care for the environment are part of Casa Vinicola Zonin’s culture and philosophy.

Only precise attention to detail in every phase of winemaking, from the vineyard to the bottle, produce top class wines. Similarly, only care for the environment throughout the whole production process makes for high quality and sustainable wines.

Since 2008, we have adopted a rigorous sustainable business program. New key points of our constantly self – renovating “green” activities are:

  • INNOVATIVE IRRIGATION SYSTEMS: Water is a valuable resource. It is a non-renewable asset whose availability is reducing and changing in relation to climate change and population growth. Casa Vinicola Zonin has adopted innovative irrigation systems, which ensure maximum efficiency of the use of water resources. Each irrigation system has a pressure bomb, also known as, Scholander bomb, which monitor the water levels of vines and ensures that the water is strictly used for irrigation purposes in order to maintain quality of grapes.
  • GREEN MANURE: Our Castello d’Albola and Rocca di Montemassi Estates have re-introduced the traditional technique of green manure, which is a mixture of legumes and grass that is necessary for organic agriculture. Using the green manure technique in the vineyards, have decreased the use of mineral fertilization and agricultural machinery.
  • PLANT MATERIAL CONTROL: The level of sustainability achieved in Zonin Estates regarding the management of pesticide treatments and storage of products has been an example to many Italian wine producers who consider us a market leader in this sector. All of our plant materials are strictly controlled and analyzed in laboratories. PCR Real-time is an innovative system that is used to monitor plant materials for potential virus.
  • FORECASTING MODELS: All Zonin Estates have a control unit for meteorological data, which is located in the International Centre for Agrometeorology based in Switzerland. Provincial and regional monitoring networks collect the information. To reduce the use of pesticides and avoid unnecessary interventions, we carry on treatments according to the data coming from monitoring pathogens and parasites from the indicated forecasting models.
  • BIOLOGICAL PEST CONTROL WITH TRICHODERMA SPP: Biological control is a method of controlling pests (including insectsmitesweeds, etc) using other living organisms. To ensure our plant fitness we use Trichoderma spp, a kind of Fungi that cause disease in insects (known as entomopathogenic fungi)and prevent wood desease
  • MATING DISRUPTION: at Feudo Principi di Butera, Masseria Altemura and Rocca di Montemassi, in order to protect our vineyards from the dreaded vine moth larvae – that can cause significant damages to grapes – without using insecticides, we contain the populations of

this insect with a technique called “mating disruption” .In order to be fertilized, the female moths release of sex hormones (or pheromones) that enable males to locate them more easily. So, we place a number of diffusers that release a high dose of female pheromones in our vineyards. These pheromone traps confuse male moths and prevent them from finding their mates. Since there is no mating, the eggs aren’t fertilized, and don’t hatch. This hormone is absolutely safe. In fact, it’s nothing more than a reconstituted “smell”. These diffusers are placed in the spring before the moth starts flying.

  • SOLAR ENERGY: Casa Vinicola Zonin Estates produce up to 40% of their own energy using photovoltaic solar energy panels. In order to reduce their visual impact on the Estates’ landscape, the panels have been hidden from view and placed on the rooftops of barns and cellars. Our Estates using efficient energy saving methods are Tenuta Il Bosco (40%), Castello del Poggio (31 %), Tenuta Ca’ Bolani (19 %), and Feudo Principi di Butera (14%).
  • PRECISION FARMING: A farming management concept based on observing and responding to intra-field variations with the goal of optimizing returns on inputs while preserving resources. Castello d’Albola and Tenuta Ca’ Bolani Estates practice precision farming techniques in their vineyards.   Maps with infrared technology are used to define plant vigor in the fields, which displays when to water or fertilize the vineyards. Using this technology saves energy and resources.
  • GPS SYSTEMS: Furthermore, all of the Estates use a satellite positioning system such as a GPS, which locates the best area to plant in the vineyards through satellite imagery and information technology. Thus, conserving both energy and resources.

At the upcoming Prowein Fair in Duesseldorf, Casa Vinicola Zonin will present its “green” projects and Sommelier Sebastian Wilkens will lead a tasting with our “sustainable” wines at Prowein Forum 7.1, on Sunday, 24th March at 4 p.m.

Furthermore, Casa Vinicola Zonin promotes and actively participates in two of Italy’s national sustainability wine projects: Magis (www.magis.me) and Tergeo (www.tergeo.it). At Vinitaly, in Verona, we will have Magis’s Stand (Pad 7 stand B8)at our disposal on Tuesday, 9th April ,from 4 pm to 6 pm to explain our increasing involvement in sustainable agriculture.

The Zonin Family and Its Values

By | Press release | No Comments

The Zonin Family and Its Values

Zonin is the name of Italy’s largest family-owned wine company and one of the most important in Europe, celebrating the diversity of Italian wine from Italy’s major wine regions. A family business and a business of families, with a passion for winemaking, and the mission to produce the highest quality Italian wine available to all wine-lovers. Having strong ties to the land for the past seven generations,

The Zonins have been “Vintners since 1821”. Alongside President Gianni, his sons Domenico, Francesco and Michele have nowadays executive roles in the company, for technical and production management, sales & marketing and financial control.

Casa Vinicola Zonin owns 9 wine estates located in 7 wine regions of Italy for a total of 4,000 hectares (9,884 acres) of properties, 2,000 (4,942 acres) of which are vine planted. The Zonin family owns their own vineyards, grows their own grapes and bottles their wines at each estate, supported by the consultancy of the world wide famous wine maker Denis Dubordieu, Œnology Professor at the University of Bordeaux, and by the expertise of one of the largest staff of oenologists and agronomists in Europe. The Zonin Family is environmentally driven and aims to continue enhancing sustainable viticulture, through a total traceability system of the wine production cycle. Study on grapes and vines, together with constant innovation and attention to market trends and market opportunities, allow Casa Vinicola Zonin to capitalize on the years of activity in the wine business and, at the same time, to open up to new challenges of globalization.

Company Brands: Zonin Label and The Estates

Casa Vinicola Zonin, based in Gambellara, in the heart of the Veneto Region, produces the well known Zonin label wines and is the core and support of its Estates, located in the most highly regarded winemaking regions in Italy and the US: Castello del Poggio in Piedmont, Tenuta Il Bosco in Lombardy, Tenuta Ca’ Bolani in Friuli, Castello d’Albola, Rocca di Montemassi e Abbazia di Monte Oliveto in Tuscany, Masseria Altemura in Apulia, Feudo Principi di Butera in Siciliy e Barboursville Vineyards in Virginia – USA. Each Casa Vinicola Zonin winery is an independent production unit, strongly linked to its territory of belonging, and has its own vinification, aging cellar and bottling facilities on site, in order to safeguard traditions and guarantee a standard of excellence.

Casa Vinicola Zonin around the World: the Process of Internationalization

Casa Vinicola Zonin is the company that distributes, sells and markets the brands belonging to the Zonin Family in Italy and abroad . 75% of total sales revenue is exported to over 100 Countries and the process of internationalization is in continuous development.

Casa Vinicola Zonin has adopted a much more market oriented approach to international business, “tailoring” custom made business plans for each country, with the belief that each market is different and unique. In key countries like United States and United Kingdom two independent business units were incorporated – Zonin USA and Zonin UK – in order to perform all the main functions from sales and marketing to importation; in Tokyo shares were recently acquired in a Japanese distribution company and important investments in China and Brazil are currently being planned.

Perfect pairing: Casa Vinicola Zonin USA kicks off second year of Italian Culinary Experience series with Eating House!

Miami, Florida (March 4, 2013) — With the success of 2012’s Italian Culinary Experience events, Casa Vinicola Zonin USA is thrilled to kick off this year’s series on March 12th with a local favorite, Eating House restaurantlocated in Coral Gables, FL.

This year, the Italian Culinary Experience will feature trending restaurants in Miami and wine tastings from Casa Vinicola Zonin’s exclusive Estate wines.  For the 2013 series, the focus is pairing non-Italian restaurants and Italian wines to showcase how well Italian wines transcend into any cuisine.  Italian wines are made to complement a wide variety of foods, which is a real treat for the taste buds. Renowned chefs will prepare a five-course menu of exquisite food and wine pairings for media, restaurateurs, sommeliers, and other affiliated parties. Each month, a different region of Italy is selected, providing guests the opportunity to experience an extensive wine tour of that region.  This month Eating House will feature a delectable menu that will complement wines from Casa Vinicola Zonin’s rising star Rocca di Montemassi Estate in Tuscany.

Eating House offers a mouthwatering menu, which features dishes such as Pasta Carbonara, Cap’n Crunch Pancakes, and picturesque Heirloom Tomatoes infused with frozen coconut milk – just to name a few. This once “pop-up restaurant” has quickly become a crowd-pleaser and is now a permanent establishment in Miami.  Who is the mastermind chef behind all of this, you may ask? His name is Giorgio Rapicavoli, a 27-year-old Miami native who has an impressive list of accomplishments– winner of Food Network’s Chopped competition, James Beard Foundation Award Rising Star Chef of The Year, winner of Eater National’s Hottest Chef in Miami 2013, and he recently made it on Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list. Giorgio Rapicavoli along with his long-time friend and business partner, Alexander Casanova, have always envisioned owning a restaurant and now they are living out their dream.

The two-hour food and wine-pairing event is organized and hosted by Casa Vinicola Zonin USA in partnership with Miami Culinary Institute, Italy-America Chamber of Commerce and Tomson Hospitality.  There will be a total of twelve events this year, seven in Miami and five in New York City.  With the event’s popularity in Miami, the Italian Culinary Experience is taking the show on the road to NYC — Casa Vinicola Zonin USA’s leading market.

Miami, Florida (March 16, 2012) – Casa Vinicola Zonin USA, sets the record straight on the “Moscato Phenomenon” explaining how Moscato Castello del Poggio – one of its signature products – is what launched the “Moscato Phenomenon” in the United States.

The “Moscato Phenomenon” began in March 2008, with a new partnership between America’s #1 Italian Restaurant Chain and Casa Vinicola Zonin USA. Shortly after the launch of Castello del Poggio Moscato IGT, the growth was startling and dramatic. Last year, Moscato Castello del Poggio was number one selling adult beverage in that chain and also number one searched-for wine on Snooth.com.

With a strong presence in all 50 states, Moscato Castello del Poggio gained immediate national attention and recognition. This “Moscato Madness” spread all over the Internet on blogs, web pages and famous rappers/artists/performers wrote songs about Moscato.

“We at Casa Vinicola Zonin USA are very proud of our ability to create a trend of the United States wine market” said Steve Howard, National Sales Director for Zonin USA. “It required a lot of hard work, a great partnership and a bit of luck, but in the end we have been able to change the wine world.“

Moscato is a uniquely sweet and refreshing white wine characterized by a refined fruitiness and delicate scents of peaches, which comes from the highly esteemed Piedmont region. Its flavor profile makes it the perfect accompaniment to desserts and fruit salads, but it has a great potential to be paired with spicy food and savory dishes as well.

Casa Vinicola Zonin USA is wholly owned by Casa Vinicola Zonin S.p.A. in Italy; a company of seven generations of wine makers with nine vineyards located in the seven most prestigious wine growing areas in Italy.
